Good morning. Have 97 4.0 4wd. Won't start. Replaced fuel pump, fuel filter and about to replace fuel pressure regulator.

Hope this works. Took old fuel pressure regulator off and it was full of fuel.

If the regulator was leaking, the spark plugs could be fouled. If so, pull the dipstick and check for a gas smell in the oil.

What was the fuel pressure pre pump replacement?

What is the fuel pressure after repairs?

Does it have spark?

Did the vacuum line to the pressure regulator have fuel in it?

Are the plugs now gas fouled?

Did you try "clear flood mode" while cranking?

So many questions...

Ok. We replaced the fuel pressure regulator. It sounded better with cranking but still wouldn't start. I smelled the oil dipstick and it did not smell of fuel

We are pretty green. We did spill some gas on a spark plug connector or two. We have been cranking and pumping the gas pedal a lot. I don't know how to check for spark

I don't know how to check for fuel pressure. We are moving next to mass air flow sensor

When you truck will crank and not start...

You have a 50/50 chance it spark or fuel.

Wait... STOP throwing parts at it.

I don't have time right now to walk you through things...

But seriously... stop just throwing parts on.

Someone will have recommended diagnostics here shortly I'm sure.

If FPR was leaking enough you could even be hydrolocked. May have already bent a valve if you're really unlucky.

I agree some diagnostics are in order.

Assume nothing. To start off, what happened that before it quit?

We just checked the shrader and there is fuel coming up there tried to check for spark and then it won't really crank anymore for some reason.

Obd scanner won't work. Fixd obd scanner won't read or it says no codes. Before it was giving codes like maybe fuel filter. Vacuum leak or oxygen sensor.

Cigarette lighter works so it is not that.

Mechanic working across the street ran over and said starter is not working. So we will replace starter. A lot of ancient parts in this thing. Just bought it 3 months ago

ancient is better than new - aftermarket parts are total crap right now.

You are more likely to make your situation worse by throwing tons of (probably 50/50 bad) new parts at it.
Instead of 2 simple things to fix you will end up with hundreds of dollars of parts and 8 that are causing issues.
Take a look at #2 - Engine rotates but will not start:

Thank you. I don't feel bad about replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter or fuel pressure regulator as they were ancient history. Getting parts from Advance Auto now as they might be a little better. Putting starter on now. Thank you for the education. Appreciate it.
