I did the engine swap in my 94 ranger, got the motor running and it runs great. but, I have tried everything and can not get my transmission to engage. My question is how many times does the torque converter seat? and should there be any play when fully seated? I know a noob qst. but I'm at a loss and never had this problem before. Its a A4LD 4.0 94 trans. With no problems before the swap. Any help would be appreciated.
:dunno:

how did you seat the converter?

I don't do this type of stuff often enough to be able to remember, is it two or three clicks to being seated? What I did after screwing up my torque converter is use a square and measuring tape. Measure from the mounting surface of the block to the mating surface of the flex plate, and then from the mounting surface of the trans to the mating surface of the torque converter. They should be equal.

been 15 years since I changed the transmission in my 91 so I don't remember the procedure........

but I do remember you can't just drop the converter on the shaft ...... seems to me I had to spin it one way, then spin it the other way......

I spun the torque converter till it clicked twice. but it seems to have play still. that is what has me a little baffled.

I took the tranny completely out of the truck and have been trying to seat the T/C, to no avail. its truly wooping my arz. I have been looking and asking anyone i can find if there is a trick or something to it. It just wont seat on the outside gear. (pump gear) I did find an old trans guy that said to keep trying cause they can be a _____. So onward with my quest to get baby truck back on the road.

update: blew up the pump ring gear when i didnt have the t/c seated right....:bawling: so tranny is getting a new pump this weekend. and baby truck will be on the road tues. :yahoo:

UPDATE!!!
YAY! IT rolls! first time in 3 yrs, it moves under its own power! Some problems but thats expected. Drove it to work today and it did great!

So, it wasn't seated? What was the proper seating procedure? I'm just curious.
