Never thought I would hear such a thing. I went outside tonight around 2am because I heard a couple cats fighting, one of which is my two month old kitten. I went out there and he ran right for me as soon as I opened the door. The other cat hid in the pine trees and yowled a few times. It's damn lucky I didn't have a gun. Stupid strays, now the kittens too scared to leave the house so I'm gonna have to let it sleep with me tonight. I hate cat hair on my bed.

Anyway, while I was out there petting the kitten and calming it down, as well as checking for injuries, I noticed that just about every dog within a mile was barking, and the ones over at the sheep farmers were snarling and I could hear them yanking at their chains. I kept wondering what could be going on, but I figured maybe they heard the cat. I couldn't be more wrong if I tried. They're right when they say it chills you right to the bone, to hear a wolf howl. No coyote or dog could make that noise. They've finally made it here. The NYSDEC has been moving them into the Catskills and surrounding areas hoping to cut down on the deer population. Scary as hell thinking about it. I'm going to be worried about letting my nieces walk around in the woods near my house even when in my sight now. And I sure the hell am not going out in the woods without a gun. I get chased by the resident bear anyway.

I once heard a pack of wolves howling while I was camping in a meadow

they weren't more than a couple miles off, I was glad I was so tired from hiking all day other wise i dont think i would have slept well that night

I have never heard or seen a wolf in my life, and this was just one. But you know what they say.. where there's on there's more to follow.

And having a scared kitten in your room is HELL.

We've got 'em here on the island. They're not really wolves but crosses with dogs apparently. They get yapping when they kill something, seem to go into a frenzy with those eerie sounds. Population is exploding and it said in the paper that they were getting smarter when killing sheep by splitting up and creating a diversion. I was cutting wood in the bush last fall and one got real close. The only thing that scared him away was when the tree fell. Others report the same and glad they had a chain saw with them. Seem to be losing their fear of man now for sure.

Even the Ranger quivers, maybe I should put her in the garage at night:rolleyes:. Everyone who still has a "g you n" is afraid to fire it, that's if they have all the necessary paperwork. Fortunately we are far enough south that a bear here, gets knocked off. People just won't put up with one near their kids. My cats disappear, we are on our 4th one, maybe I should put him in the truck at night for safety? Phil

Not to highjack your thread but Phil, could you elaborate on this statement.

Everyone who still has a "g you n" is afraid to fire it, that's if they have all the necessary paperwork.

What do you mean, "Still has a gun"?

As for wolves, I've never seen one other than on t.v. I could definetly understand how they (or even one) could scare the crap out of you.

We just had a small dog attacked the other day here, the owner scared the wolf away. Wisconsin has been bringing them back to control the deep population. See that they are also transplanting rattlesnakes into some areas what what ever reason, maybe to control the mice population?

Them things are bad news, every once in awhile someone around here gets a horse/calf/pig torn up from one of those things. The DNR usually tries to say it was wild dogs, but I can't see dogs attacking a healthy horse from ABOVE. They have found a couple that have been hit by cars, so we do have them around here.

Coyotes can sound spooky too, especially if one manages to work up a howl. Usually they just sound like a bunch of dogs, which is pretty much what they are.

I've never been afraid of coyotes, they can sound eerie but I grew up around them. Heard them yelping all my life. The damn things are terrified of people too, around here anyways.

I haven't seen one in maybe two years, but I know there's two packs of wolves near my house.

I'm just waiting for the day when someone gets nailed by one, harmless my ass, "tame" dogs attack people.

Mountain lions have been seen near my house also, my parents saw one about 10 years ago just down the road from my place, others have been seen elsewhere. The DNR JUST admitted that some tracks that were found could be mountain lion tracks.

Wolves are very cool looking. None around here, at least that I know of. Up in rural Iowa(where I, and most of my family is from), the DNR has been releasing them left and right trying to keep deer populations down.

Coyotes are ugly. We had a .22/250 sitting by the door for pinging them off. They'd sometimes get a little too close to our calfs.

I thought this kind of weird, but we actually have a mountain lion registered in our area. Very illusive and doesn't like to be seen. I think it maybe released by the DNR?

Every wolf I've seen looks like it has mange. I don't know where people are getting these nice looking pictures of wolves at, but around here they look like shit.

No wolves on my end of Iowa (the unpopulated end). The general population thinks the DNR is releasing mountain lions too, but the DNR alway says it is someones pet when one shows up. My cat is a pet and can barely kill a bird, and can't sneak up on a rabbit without scaring it off... so how are these "pets" mauling horses?

I see coyotes every once in awhile when I hunt, usually they are outside my range, but I usually lob a slug in there direction just to ease any doubts they might have that nobody likes them.

Both the local coyote population and fox population around here look pretty rough too, dunno what the deal is.
