I just realized that the M50D that I picked up from a '96 ranger is missing a switch. Since there is only one switch on the tranny, I'd assume is the reverse lights switch? On the other side of the shifter plate the spot where a switch would go is not drilled. That being said, it's going in my '84 and I guess a neutral safety switch isn't a big deal. What do yall think?

I'd say it's not a big deal as long as the clutch switch is still working. I mean, does it really matter if it's in gear if you have the clutch disengaged? Just don't pop the clutch with it in gear when you don't want to take off.

You don't need a neutral safety switch on a standard tranny because as SenorNoob said there is a switch on the clutch pedal that will not allow you to start the truck unless the clutch is in.

It's actually a neutral sense switch. It's to tell the computer if the trans is in N or in a gear, and it will modify the idle accordingly. Your 84 may not have even had that feature.
