As my Ranger has power locking but not the remote variety, I have purchased an aftermarket kit which I am about to install.

Before I install the kit I need to be sure of a couple of things

Which system of power locking does the Ranger use (pretty sure it's not D)

I also need to know where to pick up the Hazard Flasher wiring, if anyone can help with a circuit diagram for this area please? I have the diagram below but the Hazards are not covered.

Any assistance would be most appreciated (can make pictures bigger if needed)

Thanks in advance

A 1998 model is too new for me having personal experience with the wiring, but hope this helps.

You can try pulling a lock switch to "dope" it out; perhaps your kit's instructions covers that process. I suspect on a '98 that the switches go to the GEM module, which in turn controls the actuators. The GEM is probably the best place to make your wiring connections. Based on what you determine looking at the switch wiring, you may be able to catch the same wires at the GEM. I'm guessing that the switches may be of the "3 wire" variety, either Positive or Negative (your diagrams A & B). If the switches turn out to be the "5 wire" variety, or "reversal rest at ground", use your diagram E. If you have to connect to the actuator wires instead of the switch wires, at that point it will definitely be a reversal circuit, so use diagram E.

Most aftermarket kits in the U.S. flash the parking lights (although a European kit may be set up with 2 light outputs for Tatcham approval). Parking lights in Fords are usually a Brown wire, and it would be a much easier connection than using the flashers.

I'm not sure if your Ranger is different than those here, and maybe somebody with better knowledge of doing a '98 will chime in. Good luck.

Thanks for the excellent reply.

My Ranger is actually a US model so this will be very useful.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Glad to help; good luck and do let us know how it goes.

Will do thanks again.

BTW I actually live near Thatcham :-)

Wiring advice on power locking add on required please!- Update and more advice please

Hi All!

I have been having a bash at installing my powerlocking add on but have run into a couple of hurdles and some advice would be appreciated please?

As correctly stated by Alain it is a pain to get at the wires in the kick panel :-)

I have a number of questions in regards to this and some additional questions on the wiring.

I'll start with the access to the motor wiring, according to the wiring diagram I am looking to hook up the (power lock) pink/yellow wire to the white wire in my kit and the (power unlock) pink/green wire to the white/black wire in my kit. I also have a yellow wire in my kit which connects to a 12v source.

My question is that the Ranger diagram I am working with states that the truck has other feeds to driver unlock motor/passenger unlock motor and also right and left front door triggers, am I wiring correctly with the wires that I am using please? (diagrams below)

These are the diagrams I am working with:

As I mentioned earlier it is a pain to get to the motor wires via the kick panel (too short) or the door umbilical (brake pedal). Robbie D mentioned that I might able to find these wires at the GEM module.

I think I found the GEM module behind the radio to the left of the cluster (pictures below). However looking at the multiplug on the module I don't see the colours that I need, do I have the right module please?

Thank in advance for any assistance :-)

Hi Charlville. The newest wiring diagrams I have are for a '97 model, so use this with the understanding that your truck is a year later and may be different.

In 1997, at least, the doorlock wires did NOT go to the GEM in Rangers, unlike other Ford models (sorry!). However, the power doorlock relays are listed as being in the relay box #1, which is to the right of the steering column. If your truck has its relays there too, perhaps you can pick up the doorlock trigger wires (Pink/Yellow [L] & Pink Lt. Green ) behind the relay box (you may have to loosen it to get access).

If you do make connections there, the power feed to the doorlocking system is also available, as a Black/White wire (again, '97 color). Good luck.

Pull the drivers Kick panel. Locate the wires there. Pink/Green and Pink Yellow are the correct wires. I don't ever recall having problems reaching these wires. These wires should also be in the passenger kick panel. These wires should not be difficult to locate

Constant 12V+ Yellow Ignition Switch Harness

Ignition Light Green/Purple Ignition Switch Harness

Parking Lights Brown (+) Driver's Kick Panel or White/Black at Switch

Factory Disarm Dark Green/Purple (-) 4 Pin Connector Driver's Kick Panel

Door Lock Pink/Yellow (-) Driver's Kick Panel
Door Unlock Pink/Light Green (-)

Horn Wire Yellow/Light Green (-) Or Blue at Steering Column

Thanks for the replies!

If it stops raining,I'll be back at again tomorrow and let you know on the progress.

Regards

Kevin

Wiring advice on power locking add on required please! - update

Just a bit of an update:

Got everything hooked up (picked up the wires at the passenger kick panel as suggested) all the voltages are correct, the module is switching with the remote and the LED is behaving correctly. Sadly no go on the locking so far.

In all the Ranger diagrams it mentions individual trigger wires per side, however I don't have this option mentioned in the kit diagrams?

I have the white and white/black connected to the relevant lock/unlock wires. The red, yellow and yellow black to permanent lives, white to acc live and the black to earth.

As mentioned previously could be the kit needs the extra trigger maybe? I'll drop them a line on Monday, however if anyone can see glaring error please let me know?

Thanks for all the help so far!

I think that you're dealing with a negative pulse ("3-wire negative") system in the truck. If so, your module's Yellow and Yellow/Black wires should be grounded, not connected to positive; as per your Diagram A.

3 Wire Negative wins the day!

Well!

Despite all the various manuals and alarm company web sites that I looked at, Robbie D is correct in stating that it is a negative locking system on my 98 (thanks again Robbie:beer:)! Which if anyone is interested is diagram A in the previous post.

All I have left to do next w/e is hook up the parking lights/flashers (whichever is easier) and tidy up the spaghetti.

Thanks to everyone for their input:icon_cheers:, this really is an excellent forum especially for those of us so far away!

Glad to hear that you're almost finished with remote lock installation, and that it's working.

BTW, your mystery object in your other post looks like it might be a GPS antenna, or combination GPS and cellular antenna. That truck may have had a tracking device at one time.

If I'm ever in the UK, I'll take you up on a good English beer; and likewise, if you're ever in my neck of the woods, the beer's on me! Take care.
