so here is the deal. My hard drive died on saturday. Installed a new one and windows XP SP3 on monday. I absolutely cannot for the life of me figure out why my wireless card won't connect at my house. I stopped at two of my buddies places to make sure it wasnt a fluke connecting the first time. and it wasnt any ideas?

PC Gateway 7330 GZ
New hard drive 160GB IDE WD 5400RPM
OS Windows XP SP3

Have you tried resetting your router and modem? A lot of times those need to be powered off and back on again.

Go into Device Manager and remove the device, uninstall it, and then re-boot and let XP reinstall it. That may help, or at least it's a start.

I would also check to make sure in the router has not saved settings for the old setup. Example: Computer Name, IP Address (Static or DHCP), and Mac Address (ID for the wireless card.)

But resetting the router with usually fix it, also try different spots in the house to see if you get connectivity.

Plus check to see if Windows is monitoring wireless networks or the cards specific program is, each has different cut offs on signal strength and what not.

Oh and it's a Gateway... They never want to play nice!

I installed and reinstalled the wireless card driver.
I dont think its a problem with the router because my other roommates computers work. And my computer has connected to the wireless networks at 3 other places now. I just dont get it

Yeah that IS weird. Does the card pick up the fact that the router is there? When you try to connect, does all it do is just sit there, eventually failing, or what?

Is the protection turned off at your router? you may have the wrong WEP key

well the final verdict is i couldnt read my roommates handwriting and misinterpreted a 6 as a G

That is way I like Passphrases more than actual keys... lol

Glad you got it to work.
