Wireless keeps disconnecting

are you running a dsl modem? if so think it needs to be bridged to work properly.

well one quick fix is how many wireless phones are in the house and is it any where near the router if so move the phone and base to another location to see if you still have the same problem and if so u need to go out to your nearest electronics store and buy a new router that is dual band it is both 2.4 and 5.0 ghz and the router will chose the best band for you and the one that has very little to no interference to your wifi connection. and just another question how many wireless connections are you able to see in your network for if you have more then 10-15 wireless routers around you that could also be a problem i have seen this problem before. and the only solution if that is the case is to connect the wire back in.

mikecor is on the right track, a 2.4Ghz phone will interfere with wireless channel "1", however channel "6" and channel "11" are usually available. (In the US we use channels 1-6-11, other countries use different channels).

Here is my experience:
Channel 1 gets interference from wireless phones
Channel 6 gets used by AT&T and Comcast for the 2 wire routers.
Channel 11 usually isn't used.

Download NetStumbler and run it on the machine with the wireless NIC. It will tell you what APs are around you, what channel they are using and how strong their signal is.

Once you have some good data, figure out which channel has the best available connection. Keep in mind that 3 very weak 6's are better than 1 strong 11. Once you figure out what the best available channel is, contact your provider and ask them to change your access point to that channel. Your NIC should automatically adjust for it.

2.4Ghz is 802.11g, 802.11n and 802.11b. 5.0Ghz is 802.11a, most domestic equipment doesn't work with 802.11a, it is typically used for long range bridging.

this could be a simpler fix. goto walmart and buy another router. i have had problem like this before and then tried a different brand of router and it solved the problem quick. if you buy it at walmart and have the same problem return it and tell them it didnt work with your old computer then they will give a refund. one of the best routers is the linksys WRT54g or WRT54gs but i have always had good luck with linksys

Agreed, I was at my inlaws this christmas and they had a time warner provided wireless, they had them limited to 3 connections, mac filtered *sigh* zero security. Granted, they live in a pretty rural area so probably not a HUGE risk of war chalkers.

What I suggested he do is buy a Linksys WRT54g or "gs" and put it behind the ISP provided unit, that would give him 100% ownership of the security, access and IP distribution.

Have you upgraded to 802.11n yet? Man what a HUGE improvement, the Linksys RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN (IPSEC VPN tunneling between friends for shared local resources, awesome!) makes a great firewall, then the WRT160N (I opted for the cheaper 100Mbs instead of the Gig, hate myself for it) Wireless-N Broadband Router makes for a sweet local wireless network.
