I blew out a tire while off roading hunting and the tires only had 29,000 km on them so I just found a used one with roughly the same wear on it. But it did have a tire wire sticking out of the inside wall like the part where the air is held. The guy said it's nothing and just buffed it down and put some kinda epoxy/glue/cement on it. Now am I being paranoid or was the mechanic saying it's nothing to worry about true.

worry about it! i had a tire knifed last christmass eve and bought a used tire to get me by. it was o.k. at first but after about a month i had wires sticking out from the sidewall. i noticed when i put it on the truck wanted to pull to the right, i just figured it was a little bigger tire than the other front tire and delt with it. soon there were more wires and a bad vibration when driving. so i put my spare on and discoved i had a huge hump on the tread surface, apparently cords were broke inside the tire, i dont know why it didnt blow out on me. no matter what the milage on the tires, if wires are appearing, then the tire is coming apart internally.

Ya this was just one wire, on the inside. He said he would replace it if something happened to it. So I suppose that's worth something.

Yeah, I'd worry about it too. If one wire is poking out through the surface, how does it look under the rubber? No wire should be poking through, ever.

There is damage to the casing which holds the whole tire together, either at the factory or by other means.

Edit, on the inside? at least that's much closer to the wires. Still wouldn't make me too comfortable. If it had made it's way all the way to the outside I wouldn't even let them put it on my truck. They don't run as strict a QC on the inside.

Well I'm going off roading this weekend I guess I'll find out if it's going to last lol. Ya hats what I thought the the wires on the inside were closer. Ya $100 vs buying 2 new ones so they have equal wear 500$. I had to chance it and hope it works out.

If ones bad, its a weak link in that tire and just ready to fail...I'd worry about it too. Hope you aren't driving it on the road after offroading it..

One thing you incorrectly stated was.....the tire blew out...you mean the tire went flat, right? If that tire blew out you would have a hole the size of a fist or a cannon ball in it. The guy might have put a vulcan patch on it and you have nothing to worry about as long as it was not on the sidewall area. If that was on the sidewall area and it was patched then it is only good for a spare for a short distance. My wife picked up a small tree branch that stuck through the middle of the tire and her tire went flat after she parked in the garage. We saw the flat next day I had it fixed at Goodyear. They put a vulcan patch (vulcanized as they called it). It lasted and the next year we got her new tires all around. But that patch lasted and she drives that car daily. So no concern about a patch done correctly.

Don't get up to highway speeds. I wouldn't even use it on a public road, tire is internally damaged.

I PA one cord sticking out of a tire, like you describe, fails state safety inspection.

Get a different tire.

Tires are one thing I don't mess with. I had a nail go through the shoulder area on one of my BFG A/T's on my Explorer (at 90% tread), and I had it replaced. If I see cracks, it's gone. I've seen too many lives affected by poor vehicle maintenance.

I work for a nation wide tire company and he's correct, you don't want to mess with tires. Even one cord sticking out means the tire's safety is jeopardized. Its what's called "popcorn" separation which is dangerous, it can cause a blow out and the risk increases the faster you go. Also inflating the tire can cause tire failure which could cause injury or even be fatal if the tire were to blow. I'd suggest finding another used tire that is under 10 years of age-anything older is unsafe due to internal rubber deterioration. You can run different sized tires if it's short term or if you put two of equal size and tread depth on the same axle as long as it isn't all-wheel-drive or a truck with hubs that are locked all the time such as a Dodge from the mid 90's up. Also the only street-safe patch is done on the inside of the tire as long as it within the belt pack, any sidewall repairs are not safe due to sidewall flex. Here's a link you can find where the DOT date (manufacture date) is on the tire http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoSidewall.dos

Well, crap. So 2 sidewall plugs is no good? 1000 miles, no problem. Don't try it.

Gonna agree with the above majority.

Wow, the tire stores around here won't even consider fixing anything on the sidewall.
