Wire/Spring Poking Out of Seat Back

I just purchased my first Ranger, well.. first Ford as well, and have cleaning/performing maintenance on this thing since I've gotten it a couple weeks ago, so far so good! It is a '99 XLT Supercab 4.0 4x4, 60/40 seats.

Anyways, on the back of the drivers seat, about 1/3rd of the way up, there are two rods or springs poking from the inside of the seat back area, about 8-10" apart, evenly spaced, a 3-4" from the outside edge of the seat. It looks like they just came loose from some type of retainer that is supposed to hold the ends of these springs/rods.

Anyone know what I have to do to get them back in their correct places? I figured this might be a common or known issue. I searched but with no luck.

Thanks! :icon_cheers:

Two words.

As long as it doesn't effect the "comfortable-ness" of the seat I don't see a problem.

I don't think that would work in my situation, I didn't explain this part of it fully, but they aren't going straight out the back of the seat, but at a ~15 degree angle from the upper part of the seat back. If I cut the ends, it would just move the poking area up a few inches on the seat. :D

I am probably going to neat to take the upper seat fabric/cover off to get to them and see what the deal is, is this easy to do?

I have the same problem with my passenger seat, but haven't looked at it yet.

As far as taking the top fabric off, I think its just a zipper on the bottom (the crack in between the top and bottom pieces).

That's a spring that came loose. On my 02 it's not a zipper that holds the fabric but two plastic strips that interlock. Along either side of the bolsters there are strips of Velcro as well. I can't remember if you will need to remove the back from the bottom or not but I don't think you'll have to just to get the fabric off.

It's not difficult to remove the fabric. It's probably easier to the remove the back from the bottom first, it will also make it easier to repair the frame if necessary.

happened to me on my 98. the design of the seat has 2 1/8" steel rods rinning form teh headrest down to the bottom. mine broke at teh very bottom. only way i could find to repair was to take off the cloth and then the foam comes off and i welded the rods back in place and all is well

Yeah....there's two 1/16 or 1/8" rods that run from the base of the seat and up to the head rest. One of mine were broke at the bottom as well and was about to poke through the fabric on the backside. So....I left it and dealed iwth it and got new seats. lol. Bucket seats. haha.

Only real way to either cut it out or fix it would be to strip the seat of it's upholstery and foam, then get to work. Or...deal with it and upgrade the seats.

well it took me maybe an hour with all the teardown, fixing and reassemlbie, plus u can clean ur seats. as mine were full of dust and shtuff so i tore off the bottom and jsut threw them both in the wash quick and now i have clean seats too

hmmm...I may need to take apart my buckets. These newer fabrics are a PAIN to clean since the soap just soaks into the foam. lol.
