Windstar wheels?

i dont think you do have 4wheel abs. my 99 did not even have it.
and wicked-sludge yes i will call you out on every post because well i have read alot of your posts because well you have done it to me so i will only return the favor. Plus no were in your post did you talk about putting studded tires in the front of his truck, all you said was matching winter tires. IMO i dont like studded tires they make noise and suck ass in the rain. but then again im not pimping out a busted escort like yourself.

Your going to end up getting banned, that qualifies as flaming a member.

I appreciate your help, but you need to tone it down a notch.

Oh, and um..

i was saying that being able to go is only half the battle. one also needs to be able to turn and to stop, and the front end of the truck does most of the stopping and all of the turning, so studs on the front would be a good idea. but since he cant afford then, he'll just have to be careful.

Yeah, he said studs.

studs are not a good idea on the front of a car/truck or whatever they DO not handle well.

most tire splaces reccomend installing studs at all 4 corners regardless of what drive (fwd, rwd, or 4wd) the car is. some places wont even sell you studs unless you buy 4.

We have all four studded on the Van. Handles like a dream.

If anything they will give you MORE grip, on prettymuch any surface. It's like a dog running on grass, nails dig in. I guess if you were driving on a tile floor you would go sliding into the wall after a tennis ball though.. just don't chase tennis balls in your car. :icon_thumby:

Photoshopped it for the hell of it.

Couldn't even get out of the driveway today, had to borrow the minivan.

God damn that's demoralizing. Someone I knew met me at a red light, laughed and flipped me off with their passenger yelling "MINIVANNNNNNNNNN."

Once the light turned green I was no longer embarrassed at driving the van and left them in my dust. 3.8 V6 FTW!!

"MINIVANNNNNNNNNN."

:icon_rofl:

thats something my friends would do. glad you smoked em.

do you do much highway driving? if not, you could always get a cheap set of chains for your truck.

i ran a set of clunky old ladder chains on my 2wd s-10 for the few years i had it. there was nowhere that thing wouldnt go in the snow and ice.

after i got the ranger, i moved to a new apartment on the top of a very steep hill (actually the hill that let to the ski lift). i ended up getting cable chains for it. they rode so nicely that i could run them on the front as long as i kept it under 40MPH or so. having them on the front really helped to control my descent to work in the morning.

The main reason that tire stores want you to put 4 of the same tire on is for rotation. Rotation extends tire life dramatically. I would not drive a vehicle if I knew it had studs on the front! I don't drive front wheel drives either. Snowmobiles are a good example of what Motorcraft was trying to say (before he got rude). Drive a snowmobile with good carbides and studs onto a dry patch of cement. Then try to move it. You will find out why studs suck on dry pavement.

Wicked Sludge, I thought about chains. My driving is around a quarter mile of highway (55mph) and then another 8 or so of county highway. (35mph-50mph) I wouldn't want to have to deal with constantly putting them on and off when I need them, since that would be a lot.

Mutant Pony, I drove the Minivan today with studs on all four, she handled perfectly. Although what you say does make some sense, I've seen those suckers dig into bluestone and tear a grove in them when the breaks locked up. On a road, I could see it doing much the same. I'm confident with their stopping/moving/handling power.

The thing is that that minivan has 90% of the vehicle wieght on the front tires. (slight exaggeration). You could put bald tires on it and it would get around better than the Ranger. Add about 200# to the back of your Ranger and you'll be fine. I haven't needed 4wd yet on my Ranger. We have several inches of snow on the ground. I have Glacier Grip IIs on it and no weight. I do have that extra stick when I need it though. Makes me really want a lowered truck! LOL!

I have 250#'s of stone in the back right between the wheel wells. Still didn't take me anywhere.

225/70/15 all season radials?
Open rear end?

Slick roads you need a soft tire. Those wranglers are drag slicks as far as the snow is concerned. At least you did go down to a 75. Firestone, winterforce. They are cheap and will take you anywhere you want to go. My personal fav is the glasier grip/discoverer MSR. Same tire, different name. They out perform the average studded tire on ice and have stud holes molded in. I have never used studs (illegal in Mich except mail and emergency)and have never needed them.
The biggest error I've seen people do in snow is stomp on the throttle thinking that will help them in some way. Very light use of the throttle or brake is required.
