winch..

yeaaaaaa...ok?:icon_confused:
are you saying be careful around winches or am i not getting the point?

"A winch is a great tool but is probably the most dangerous piece of equipment you will ever install on your truck. " This statement wasn't clear? Do you fall down a lot for no aparent reason? :woot:

Just kidding about the falling down part! A winch is perfectly safe as long as you respect it and use it properly. Just make sure you know what you are doing before you use one. The more you know, the more you can do with them.

yea i have alot of experince with winches, due to quading..
but i have to ask you something that Ive always scratched my head about, what the hell is your Ranger Hover Truck that is in your name? lol

Most of the time, you need only a little help. That's about 90% of the time. In many cases, you need the help to go backwards. Like the time I drove down an ATV trail and got wedged between two trees in deep sand. Or when I drove off the edge of a cliff and was saved by the radius arms hanging me up on the edge. But usually, it's just a little help. 6,000# is a lot of help. In fact, your winch will only pull maximum rating at the last layer. If you take a 6,000# winch and cut off all but 50' you will have almost the power of an 8,000. The rest you put a loop on each end and keep it for a spare.

I have a 2,000# ATV winch I use all the time and it's pretty strong. A 6,000# is enough for almost anything, and the snatchblock will overcome the 10%.

All valid and tru points Will, I just look at it differently. I like my overly strong winch because I get at least 4000-6000 lbs of pull with the most of my cable still on the spool, thus I still have the most speed, which I appreciate when I just need a little help.
And about the backwards winching. I LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUVV my winch for that as well. "HUH, there is no trees (or space) infront of me...." well, I undo my hitch pin and lug it to the back. Problem solved. It's kickass. I had to do this on my first stuck last sunday! lol

Quad winching is different from truck winching BECAUSE there is A-LOT more force developed. The rigs are heavier, the winches are stronger, etc. I know, obviously the line is bigger, but so are the consequences of a mistake. (eg, where guys hook lines, when my pal from work came to help me retireve Bronco, the 1 line he hooked up (as opposed to me hooking lines up) ended up pulling his bumper off, just and experience (with trucks, not quads) thing i guess) I think what he was
reffering to with the 'most useful tool' bit is there is some ingenious ways to get out when you have a winch and some rigging available to you.
I think he is just being imaginative with the Ranger Hover Truck bit, dreaming, if you will.

ok thanks,

Winch? Nah, just get a hoist puller. Its all the work out you may need.

Actually, a winch is a very usefully piece of equipment. And its always best to dump more money into a high quality one then a cheap one. For a Ranger chassis, I would suggest at least a 9K lbs for off-roading. Maybe a 6K lbs for more street use during the ice & snow months. Extra tow straps, snatch block, and chain hook-ups are also very nice to have. I always carry a 25' tow strap closed loops and 20' tow row with the metal hooks, for that "just in case" equation.

I always got a looped 25' tow strap too,
but yea i was lookin in to them 8000lb hoist, theyre on sale now for $25, might get one now untill i get enough money from my job to pay for a real good winch, thanks

This has be addressed in the past,

do not include 'yank' straps in your winch pull, do not. Soft straps are for yanking, hard line (cable/chain) is for winching.
