I recently pulled the 2.9 and trany out of my ranger and am starting the process of converting to a 5.0 but i am getting mixed stories on whether or not i can just change the bellhousing or if i need to build a new trany. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What trans do you have now, auto or manual? There have been adapter plates made as far as I know for some of the stock transmissions, but the trans won't live long behind a V8, especially an automatic. Trying to make it easy on a 4wd swap? :) Might be able to pick up a trans and transfer case from the junk yard for how much the adapter would cost and you'd have a more bullet proof set up. And that's even if you can find an adapter to make it work. I would see what other combos are being run, I am just an AOD 2wd which I only paid $225 for the trans.

What year is your truck? 2wd or 4wd? Auto or manual?

I guess you have already pulled the trany so you know if the bell housing and trany is one or two pieces. I believe the adapters are becoming hard to find. I have talked to advance adapters about their adapters and they don't sell them anymore. They told me they sold one set last year. Not enough demand to keep making them.

Run a V-8 trans behind a V-8, be glad you did.

if you have a body lift, you're open to pretty much anything. my c6 fit like a glove. and i only had to move the crossmember about an inch forward.

i know c4's work good, and for newer ("5.0" as opposed to "302") i guess AOD is the auto of choice.

as far as manuals, im sure a t18/t19 or np435 would fit with a body lift, but those are pretty overkill. i know a t5 fits perfectly even without a body lift. someone talked about using a ZF5 once, but im not sure what the outcome was...

^ +1. A V6 transmission's life could be measured in minutes behind even a mild 302. There are adapters to mate a V6 trans to a V8 but it's a hell of a lot cheaper to just get the right tranny the first time.
