I bought a donor '91 Ranger for the trans. It didnt have a motor when i purchased it. Which was fine because i only needed the trans. BUT some days after i had bought it i started workin on getting the trans out when i ran into some interesting things. I noticed the fuel rail was different:icon_confused:. The guy who i bought it from told me it was a '90 and that it had a 2.9. The fuel rail wasnt a 2.9 fuel rail. I got the VIN number off the truck and compaired it to the one on the title. IT WAS NO MATCH!!!:pissedoff: Turns out its a '91 and it had the 3.0.

Im was wondering if anyone knows if the trans would bolt up to my '88 2.9L. Its the same A4LD trans but i aint too sure if the bellcrank housing is the same. Id appreciate any help.:icon_thumby:

no the 3.0 trans will not bolt up to a 2.9. the only thing that will bolt to a 3.0 tranny is a front drive 3.8. the 2.8 ,2.9 , and 4.0 are all the same though

son of a b****... thatd mean i bought the donor truck for nothing. What if i were to swap out the bellhousing from the 2.9 trans onto the 3.0 trans?

Resist ANY temptation to seperate the pump from the bellhousing YOURSELF

It requires special tools to remount it and get it correctly centered.

MY recommedation is disassemble the dead 2.9 trans yourself and take the bare bellhousing and the 3.0 trans to a reputable automatic trans guy to swap over for you.

well ive already had to replace the trans b4. the one in my truck now came out of an older V6 mustang. The starter was on the passenger side so i had to switch the bellcrank housings. i didnt have to remove the pump on either one of the bellcrank housings. Unless the its diff for some reason. but i shouldnt c why because its the same exact trans. Its only the bellcrank housings that have to b switched.
