well winter is coming up so time to put the camaro away. unfortunatly my truck is looking a little sad. Anyway its an 87 ext cab 4x4 5 speed with the 2.9l. first gear is blown but i found a freshly rebuild trans and transfer case out of an 83 4x4 for $225. will these to items fit my truck? the new trans does not come with a clutch or flywheel but mines alright if they will fit together. thanks for helpin me get this thing back on the road.

What motor is in the 83?

i think he said it had a 6 cylinder but not sure

According to my local salvage yard these will fit your truck. They stated that there are 2 types of trannies. Mazda & Mitsubishi, you just have to find out which one you have, it looks like they are identifiable by the number of pan bolts.

BRONCO II 86-87 M.T.; Mazda/Toyo Kogyo Trans (14 oil pan bolts)
RANGER 86-87 M.T.; 4x4, Mazda/Toyo Kogyo (14 oil pan bolts)

BRONCO II 85 M.T.; Mitsubishi Trans, 12 oil pan bolts
BRONCO II 86-87 M.T.; Mitsubishi Trans, (12 oil pan bolts)
RANGER 85 M.T.; 4x4, Mitsubishi, 12 oil pan bolts
RANGER 86-87 M.T.; 4x4, Mitsubishi (12 oil pan bolts)

ok thanks so will the mitsu and the mazda fit my truck? or do i need to determine which one im buying and which one my truck already has?

get the mazda regardless, and only get a mazda, you're looking for the M5OD, anything made after 1988 will have one.

edit: technically, both will fit, but the mitsu is a piece of shit.

Will the '83 trans fit?

Not exactly, but it might be "Adaptable" if you are willing to do that.

The thing is being an '83-83 it MUST be the early version of the T-K transmissions

And basically? you don't want it.

Your truck probably is a Mitsubishi FM145, you don't want another ofn those either.

Like everyone is aying the trans you want is the Mazda Built M5OD-R1 used
from '88-up though it wasn't the ONLY trans in the later trucks.

there was a later Mitsubishi, the FM146 but it isn't materially better
than the FM145.

Switching to an M5OD-R1 will have some issues...
the hole in the floor of an '87 (or earlier) must be extended forward,
the Catalytic converter heat shield either needs to be trimmed or replaced.
the Transmission crossmember must be relocated (there is another set of
holes in your frame for the A4LD trans) and you get to replace BOTH driveshafts.

The front one needs to be longer and the rear to be shorter because the MAzda transmission is 2" longer than the trans you have now...

lol alright wow thank you so much very knowledgable so i want to 88 and up mazda trans with 14 oil pan bolts will it have numbers or other ways to identify its the right one?

a m5od from a 4.0 or 2.9 will fit the 2.9 is geared lower in first second and third from the 4.0 trans i think the m5od was made from 88 to the present. one from a 2.3 or 3.0 will not fit your truck. and if you do get a m5od get the shifter to as it is diiferent that the one on your trans. and this will help you identify the trans

I agree with heptofite, they both will fit and the Mazda one is much better. It's up to you either one will fit, you may have to maybe modify the plugs for the backup light switch (no biggie if you have too).Make sure also you get the shifter with the trans if you switch types.

well update i found a better deal.....a m50d out of a 89 4x4 with the 2.9l v6. he says it works good and im gettin it for 120. anything i should check on it to make sure it works or will i just have to take my chances?

I suggest to check the clutch parts, slave cylinder, line, plate etc, make sure they are the same.

ok im not sure if it even comes with a clutch? will mine work? lol damn theres more to this than i expected.
