I am attempting to trouble shoot a problem with my 1988 Ranger 2 wd automatic. It will not turn over! The starter solenoid/relay clicks but starter with not operate. Here is what I know:

Battery is good 13 +/- volts, solenoid/relay new, starter removed and tested ok at local parts store, top lug of starter solenoid/relay gets 13 +/- volts, only getting 9 +/- volts at the starter connection and the same voltage from the red/lt blue wire at the "s" terminal of solenoid/relay, motor is not seized (turned over using socket and breaker bar on the crank shaft bolt).

I know that the neutral safety switch can be a problem but since I am getting voltage from the red/lt blue wire at the solenoid/relay "s" terminal and the backup lights work, I am assuming that it is working properly also.

I'm out of ideas, anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

Well an old trick that may help in your troubleshooting .....Hit the starter itself with a piece of 2/4 or the wood HANDLE of a hammer a few wacks,....then try to start it...If she turns over you may want to look up the price of a new starter .....

Check your connections. Battery could have the voltage but not enough amps to do the job.

+1

also check cable ends for corrosion..

Ya I have seen corrosion problems a couple times on the battery terminals for my brothers ranger and mine. Makes the starter just click but everything else electronic in the cab still works
