this is on a 87 ranger with the 2.9. I recently replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor to fix my missing issue. well that's fixed but now after I run the truck for maybe 10 miles then shut it down and try to restart it about 1/2 hour later it won't start.

it acts flooded and the exhaust smells really strong of gas. it will just crank if it fires one time it will die shortly after. while its running everything seems fine. just when it sits after cooling off a bit it doesn't want to restart.

any ideas? thanks in advance.

Still kinds sounds like you have a spark issue.. Did you retime it after switching out all your parts?

I know that it may not seem necessary but just something to look at .

Check the Fuel Pressure Regulator(FPR) on the fuel rail, it has a vacuum line attached, check that line for fuel or the smell of fuel.

Fuel injected engines use a sensor as a "choke", this is the ECT(engine coolant temp) sensor.
This is not the same as the sender used for the dash board temp gauge, although they look similar, the sender has 1 wire, the sensor has 2 wires.
The ECT "tells" the computer to run the engine rich when it is cold and then leaner as it warms up.
If the ECT sensor acts up you could be trying to start a warm engine with "full choke" which would be hard to start and smell of gas.
After engine cools off it would start with rich mix.
The ECT sensors rarely fail, but not never fail :)
read here on how to test, not hard to test:
