Ok I bought a p.o.s. I know that now but i don't know what to do know I bought an 83 ranger with the 2.3 in it. It ran rough when I first got it smoke coming out of the exhaust and smeeled bad of gas so I replaced the head with a rebuilt one came with cam and everything ready to go I also got a rebuilt carburetor. I've also put on a new computer new iac valve the thing on the side of the carburetor new water pump new alternator plugs and wires and battery. But here is what it does whenever I first put the carb on when it is compltely empty of gas the truck will start up and run great for about 5 minutes then it just fades out starts spuddering and choking gas startsshowing up under the carb and then it dies with a puff coming back out of the carb any suggestions on this problem I'm out of money so a simple fix would be great I've already changed so much it has to be something stupid doesn't it. Oh yeh no cat conv. Just a glasspack nothing to get clogged also after it quits running it will not start again well if you hold down on the pedal it will sputter and shake but will not rev up any I'm stuck

Do you have the computer ignition It sounds like the TFI module on the distributor getting hot it takes a thin wall socket or a torx screw bit tip take it to the part store and have them test it for you make sure the test it multiple times so it it hot enough to simulate your condition you can also put the timing light on to see if you are losing spark if you have good spark when it dies did you check the egr valve disconnect the vacuum to it and plug the tube after it stalls and see if that has anything to do with it. are you sure all the vacuum lines are right and do you have a code reader. Just go through everything twice you just might be missing something maybe the float level idle air adjust screw tun all the way in not too tite and out 1 1/2 turn to begin with is your choke open all the way did you put new carb gaskets on and check the base of the carb with a strait edge did you unplug the spout wire to time it. were you in a hurry to get it running back up and look at everything.

i m thinking it has something to do with a vacuum line it will start now after 2 days of sitting but its not evem close to right there is a hesitation when I pump the pedal it revs up nice but then when I let back off it goes into this chugging motion like it wants to spudder out I work nights so during the week I don't get a lot done with it I have already replaced the iac and the brain I got the comp. Thru auto zone which I here its a 1 to 5 ratio to get a good one I'm hopeing its just a vacuum line somewhere I'm over looking I did go way to fast with it even though it was only a couple hours a weekend

"starts spuddering and choking gas starts showing up under the carb and then it dies"

Sounds like a problem with the float in the rebuilt carb to me.

But it's been a LONG time since I touched a carburetor.

This is the second rebuilt carb I bought the first one I rebuilt twice with new floats and new needle seats then figuring it was still the carburetor I bought a brand new after market "rally" carburetor it runs good for a while but still sputters I'm almost positive its some sort of vaccuum problem its an old truck. Probly a cracked line or something I'm going to change them all as soon as I get a little money I'm pretty sure I can follow the very small diagram in my chilton lol hopefully it works is the tfi the controle module or somebody said its under the distributor cap if so what does it do I thought it was just a pickup coil under it
