i have a 1990 ranger 4cyl, with a 5 speed, which i think is the m5od. the 4cyl is blown up and the transmission is almost brand new. i have a 2.9 that i think cam out of a 88 ranger, will the tranny bolt up?

The 2.9 had an auto tranny on it, which was the a4ld.

also will the tc from the 2.9 go on my 4.0 explorer?

No. The 4banger and 2.9L/4.0L bolt patterns are different. M5ODs do not have removable bellhousings, so the only option to reuse the transmission is an adapter. It will be (much) cheaper to get the correct transmission from a junkyard.
