I have a 2000 ranger that i recently replaced the transfer case motor on. After replacing the transfer case motor my 4wd worked fine til tonight. My selector seems to work fine meaning when i turn the selector the on dash indicator changes and i can also hear the transfer case shifting. I was really wanting to switch to manual hubs to eliminate the vacuum hub problem but just want to be sure that my ranger will work with manual hubs. Any advice?

Yeah you can get AVM manual hubs for your truck as Warn doesn't make em for our trucks. But with yours being a 2000 you may or may not have the PVH hubs it may be the newer live axle setup. To find out, pull off the front cap and if its just a metal end cap you have live axles or vacuum hubs if its got a plastic hub with a metal mesh in it.

I havent checked yet but Im assmuing I dont not have the live axle setup because when the transfer case is in 4wd position the front drive shaft turns but does not put power to the front tires. Im hoping its just that the vacuum system is not working. If i have live axles I guess I have a much bigger problem.

Yeah sounds like you have the PVH hubs. You can take them apart and perminately lock them or turn them into manual hubs aswell for the time being until you get the AVM hubs.
how do you permanently lock them?

I'm having the same issuse, i just posted for ideas. Summitracing.com has manual locking hubs for $145.00 if it helps you. I drive my ranger everyday and need good MPGs thats why i'm voting not for the full-time locking hubs.

I been doing some more research and came up on this and was wondering if it really worked?

Yes that does work, Infact thats what I did on my truck for the time being, But I just leave them locked cause I go in and out of 4x4 all the time during the winter.

I actually only noticed maybe a .5 mpg drop with the hubs locked in all the time. Then again maybe I have something wrong with my hubs or axles and it was causing drag anyways.

THe quote you did below is how to perminately lock them.

I gave this a try and it seems to work ok, (seeing as my hubs were not working at all. so we'll see how it works over time.

I just did the temporary fix where ya just pop out the screen on the cap and use your finger to manually work your hubs. I tried it out and it seems to have worked, should get me by til I can the AVM's.

I think I'll do a locker in the rear first then I'll switch to manual hubs
