Will a 98 m5r1 work in a 93?

Hey guys, I've been researching the forums the best I can but I still have no definite answer. I know the 98 has a different style shifter and the neutral switch was eliminated. My truck is a 93 3.0 4x4 5 speed. The transmission I have found is from a 98 3.0 4x4 5 speed. Is this a straight forward swap or are any modification needed?

93 needs a mechanical drive spot for the VSS.
The 98 won't have one.

Look at the aft driver side of your transmission for a VSS attached to your speedometer cable. If it has that, the 98 trans won't work because it lacks that drive connection.

Ah ok, thanks for the info! I guess the next question is how hard would it be to swap the tail housings to retain that.

The VSS (speedo drive) was never on the transmission on 4x4 trucks (it's on the transfer case).

Good to know, so I will just swap the transfer cases.
