I have a chance to buy a 1991 Ranger for $500 ,but it needs a tranny. Located 1 on C/L from a 89 with the 2.9V-6 for $150. Need to know if it would work before spending the dough.

AFAIK It won't work.
The only one that will work is a 3.0
You can however swap the 2.9 guts into the current 3.0 case (If you have the 3.0 case). I happen to have access to a 3.0 tranny for $250. But shipping may not be favorable for you. I will send you any parts you need out or off of it if that'll help.
