I have an 85 Ranger and I want bigger tires.

I have some 17 x 8 inch rims from a 98 Mustang GT, but I don't want real low profile tires on it. 245-65-17's from a lot of late model smaller suvs look good, but will they fit my Ranger without big issues?

Sorry to tell you this, but no. The 245s will end up probably rubbing on the edges, due to the width.

The other thing is, a 17" rim will also probably rub, due to the difference between it and the 14" stock size you have. However, if you're willing to put a lift kit on your truck, you could get away with it--I've seen a B2 that had 17s and a 3" lift (I think).

But anyway...to answer your question, if you're going from the stock 14" rim to the 17" rim, it'll be too tall without some modification. The 245s, unless you do the same modifications, will be too wide, even though you have a low (e.g., 65) profile tire.

That's the size I have on my Sport Trac, they're not all that big but Gen 1 Rangers do not have real big wheelwells so I think you'll have to lift it a little bit. Also with Mustang rims I can almost guarantee they will rub on the inside unless you get wheel spacers.
