I have a 1989 bronco II 4x4, 2.9, auto trans.Trans is bad, have a 1986 bronco II4x4,2.9,auto trans. parts truck. Question is will the 86 trans work in the 89? I read something about the wiring changed, something to do with 3-4 shift? What do I need to do with wiring to make the 86 trans work?

the 3/4 shift solonoid on the 89 is electronic controlled and the 86 is hydraulic. also you may have shifter issues as i know the interchange manual says 88 or 89 ranger or 88 b2 only will fit an 88 ranger . does the 89 b2 have a column shifter or a floor shifter?

the 89 is colume and 86 is floor shifter. since the 86 is hyd. controled, could the wiring on 89 just be by passed since it isn't needed and if so how?also do I need to use the floor shifter out of 86? Thanks very much for reply.

I still want 4th gear-86 is hydralic controlled right, so I would not need the 3-4 shift sol.just wondering how to by-pass 3-4 shift electronics .and not the torque converter lock up , if possible

The '89 computer would be most vexed at the lack of response from the 3-4 shift solenoid.

If you really want to use the trans you have Yes, using the floor shifter from the donor vehicle is pretty much mandaory, as the shift arm on the side of the transmission cannot easily be changed.

wouldn't the computer be as vexed with installing a 5 speed?does the computers need switching also? are wouldthe engine light just come on ?I hate to spend alot on rebuilding the 89 if the 86 will work. what problems would I have with the computer if I installed the 86?

i am not sure you might check with a tranny shop to see if you could switch the plug on the tranny and the valve body. i am not sure if it would work but might be worth checking out.

Yep that is what I would do ...

You can also change the shift arm coming out of the transmission and you can than use the same shifter
