Wifes Honda transmission.....

I think my wifes transmission is about to take a crap.

The last couple of days I noticed it making a rattle noice once in a while at idle. This morning on the way to work she called me and told me that it wouldn't shift out of first gear, but about the time I answered, it shifted. She made it to work ok.

It's a 2001 Honda Civic. I guess these have the most transmission problems of all the Civics.

It seems like I've heard of these having a transmission solenoid that goes bad, and I think I read somewhere that some of the Hondas had a torque convertor that had its internal components come apart.

Anyone have any experience working on Honda Civic transmissions?

I remember throwing a few rocks at a honda civic in a junkyard once... I feel that fixed it's problems.

A rattling noise doesn't sound like a solenoid/valve body problem. Though I might buy that it's a torque converter (or maybe oil pump).

I'd grab a stethoscope, idle the car, and make SURE it's the transaxle, though. Could be even more expensive....or massively cheaper (say, cat heat shield).

There are quite a few parts in an automatic transmission that could come loose and rattle at idle.

I first thought the cat as well, but it seems like I've heard this noise before in a FWD car that was caused by the tranny.

I remember the older Hondas have a odd auto trans design. It was like a manual trans geartrain with auto/hydraulic shifting. The only auto trans that can actually grind gears.

Other than that, I have no real information to give you.

make sure it has actual honda brand trans oil in it, it has some kind of friction modifiers added to it. the trans has no replaceable filter so its like changing a manual trans oil.
