Why so much bass?

First and foremost I don't want this to turn into an argument, or a measuring contest!

I have never personally felt a need for more then a single 15" in a sealed box(in the trunk of a car), in my truck I'm running either a single 12" or single 8" both sealed, depending on season.

So I want to know why? Why do you guys feel the need/want to have thousands of watts, and 2 or more subs? Help me understand this.

Also just throw in what your running.(size & number of them, box type)

Because some people think a distorted "Crunch" is what music is supposed to sound like?

Personally I think crisp highs are more important... When Lars Ulrich starts hammering on that snare drum your teeth are suppose to feel like they are crawling out of your gums.

my system can get pretty loud, but the bass can barely be heard outside of my truck. when my windows are down, the wind noise is pretty bad. so i turn the volume up. for example, with the windows up i probably have the volume at around 20-25 out of 62. with the windows down i have it at 35-37. i think ford rangers are tin cans with lots of wind/road noise. but honestly, i just love loud music.

My one 10" sub in a sealed box is all I need. I installed it for myself only, not to show off to other people. In fact, I try my best to hide it and I turn it down when I get close to school. I already had one sub box stolen, I really don't need that to happen again. I have it tuned so it thumps really well, but it also doesn't drown out the rest of the music. Even when I turn it up, it's not that audible outside of the truck.

I understand the concept of feeling your music. I play guitar and have a Marshall half stack. When Im playing by myself or at a lower volume, I turn the bass up on my amp to feel the low end chunk. but if I have a band backing me or Im above 5 the bass gets cranked down and treble upped so I can cut hrough the mix. That being said, I dont run any subs in my car or truck. 6x9s are enough for me. I cant stand rap so i have no want for that.

This is something I will never understand, since IMO, the whole point of building a sound system is for improved sound quality. Multiple massive subs have nothing to do with sound quality, just volume.

If that's what people want to spend their money on, so be it. I won't be shy in saying that I dislike it and think it's pointless. Nobody can get mad at me for saying that, since people who feel the need to blast bass that can be heard 5 blocks away don't care about what other people think anyway. They're obviously not concerned about who they offend, or disturbing the peace.

I have an Infinity Basslink. The 10" sub sounds outstanding in my truck. It thumps hard - and the bass stays in the truck. It has more than enough punch to fill out the low end of my music. I'm more concerned with faithful reproduction of the entire frequency range - not drowning it out with bass, or having to blast it at insanely high volumes to be heard over the subs. Even though my sub is virtually inaudible outside the truck, I still keep the volume low on residential streets and at red lights. I play my music for me - not to force feed it to everyone around me.

Well I like the way bass feels. Plus it makes young girls want to dance whenever i'm cruising. I only have one shallow mount 10 inch kicker woofer but will be getting another one to balance it out. And sometimes some a-hole has loud bass so its always nice to shut them up by having more thump. I guess it goes back to who is the most "macho" thing.

i love loud bass and feeling my eyes shake, but i dont like the mids highs and lows to be un preportional. an unballance of frequencys usually gives me a headache. so i try to juice up everything as much as my pocket book allows. and the result makes for a great party/camping truck.

imho this is what separates the men from the boys. im losing high pitch hearing, some rock i can take but the ripps give me a head ache, no matter the vol level.

now alot of "boys" have pounding systems, to parking lot pimp, for no reason, were some more music forward people like me got my 1000w badge not from one sub amp or or two big amps for the subs.

but instead, had a highs and lows amps, added subs, replaced facotry speakers. set crossovers for all tweeters, comps and sub, measured true DTA settings, and spent hours tuning and adjusting to make a truck sound just as good playing ACDC, lil wayne, or trans Siberia orc, as well as no one frec range over powering, no matter the vol settings. that is a true audiophile.

For me (have had everything form 10s to 12s to 15's) i just like experimenting with different things and showing it off...makes me feel like ive accomplished something...just one of my hobbys i enjoy working on.

i agree with allan. i like to hear metallicas drum beat ya to death. stevie ray vaughans guitar snares to scare ya. things like that.

biggest ive ever put in my ranger was a 400 watt rms crunch amp with 2 12'' pheonix gold subs.

now with my new car im getting, ill be running 2 12''s in the trunk, with a kenwood deck, and clarion speakers cause im on a tight budget.

the subs will get 200 rms each.

and when i get more money, ill get some polk audio components and amp em with a memphis 50x4 rms amp.

its only sooo much bass if you dont have the mids and highs to go with it..everything has to be balanced. i love it..but there is a point where it can become too much, im still looking for that point though. but for me, i use my stereo on a daily basis, driving to work, wakes me up, gets me ready, or at partys out in the middle of nowhere or on friends propertys, or where ever im at...especially on long trips, late at night..roll the windows down, floor heater on, stereo as loud as it will play cleanly..keeps me up and on the road. idk..everyones gonna have different opinions, but its just what your into..some people like bagged 2wd rangers, some people like 44's and d60's under thier ranger.
but im running about 1500rms..with four 10's and i LOVE it..
