Why do sport tracs get better mileage than rangers?

Are you happy with your truck so far? You gonna keep it for a long time?

And that's the problem, I don't really know. I like the size of the truck, dimension wise I need nothing bigger. I prefer the appearance of the older trucks, but those would take as much, or more, work to get in the shape/condition I want. I'd like a more powerful truck with better brakes, this truck sucks at towing, even more so at stopping. If I knew that I would be happy with an engine rebuild and Explorer disks I would go that route and keep it, but I can't be certain. If I'm going to go so far as to do an engine swap I'd rather just move to a different truck, if I'm building it might as well be what I want. Before I can make any decisions on all of the above I have to finish the current project truck.

the ole mans 01 sport trac 31s with 4.10s gets about 19-20 on the highway my 99 ranger 4.0 5spd and 4.10s with 32s gets about 14mpg. and i get 18 mpg with 31s TOWING a sled trailer.. figure that one out.. my 95 thats SAS 35inch tires 4.56 gears and has a 04 SOHC 4.0 gets 13mpg..

I kinda can believe the bed idea, that the wind misses it. But what about a ranger with a tonneau cover? My '88 has one but when i had plates on it i never drove a tank with it off to see. But i remember longer ago on here a discussion about if it helps or not. And I THINK someone said myth busters did a show on it and it doesn't help, or at least not that much.
