Why do new head gaskets block off so many ports?

I have an 88 Ranger that needs a head gasket replaced. Upon inspecting the new gasket I noticed that alot of the ports are not cut out of the gasket. Some are just pin holes and some are completely missing. I have never experienced this. Does anyone know why?

I have attached a picture with red circles in all of the areas in question. I have also noticed that these seem to be the only gaskets available. Are there other gaskets out there that have the correct ports or is there some reason for blocking them all?

If my memory isn't failing me, I heard the middle openings are covered so you get water circulation to the back of the engine. All the extra holes were necessary to create the block but must be covered to cool the rear of the engine. That info was about the inline 6, but it is probably the same for the v6.

the head gaskets are designed to direct the flow off coolant as sjr53 explained. if all the ports were open the coolant would just "dead end" in the cylinder heads with very little flow.

the ports are also sized to provide the proper flow to the heads. too fast and the coolant wouldnt have enough time to soak up heat from the engine. too slow and it boils.

they are the right gaskets.
