Why cant I buy......

I wondered about the diesel oil. But it said not for vehicles equipped with catalytic converters....so i thought better of it.

I believe that warning is because it has a lot of zinc in it, which isn't great for modern cats. It won't hurt Rusty, or your 460 any since the oils had lots of zinc in them when those two were new. I ran that stuff in my 2.9s for over 50K miles and never had any problems.

I bought 6qts of 10w30 motorcraft at china mart, of course they were out of FL1As so i went to autozone and paid 10 frickin bucks for one.

You got raped, which is exactly what I expect from the Zone. At Advance Motorcraft and AC Delco are the lowest priced filters on the shelf, usually less than $5 unless its for a diesel.

My buddy says im stupid for runnin motorcraft, he runs mobil 1 oil/filter. I think he buys into what tv commercials say to much, he pretty much repeats them word for word.

Your buddy is the dumb one. If it's good enough for the guys who say 'It lasts this long or we pay for it" it should be good enough for forever.

The only exception to that is Ford's (and a lot of others these days) service specs on things like transmission fluid that say it never needs done.

I never run anything less than 10w oil, it gets way too thin for the summers here. As for brands, I don't really care too much.

The 10w has -nothing- to do with how the oil performs when warm.
^THAT^

The W number is the oils viscosity index at 32* F. If you live in Florida and your yearly low is 40* there is functionally no difference for you between 15W-40, 10W-40, or 0W-40 (not that that is a thing).

Here is some good reading for you:

Good tidbit on that diesel oil info. I may switch to that if motorcraft 10w30 keeps getting scarce.

I knew i was getting raped, but i advanced was on the other side of town and autozone was right there. I got halfway home then rememberd my local autovalue (2mins from my house) stocks them to, you just have to ask.

As far as my buddy goes, some of the things he blows money on is just downright stupid. He spends huge sums of money because "more expensive is always better"....not always the case in my findings.

But then he'll junk a perfectly good 98 Exploder sport (2wd/5sp) because it needed front spindles and "wasnt worth it".

I dont get it...

Oh and btw 0W40 is a thing....my quad calls for it :)

I read that article, I still don't want a 5 winter oil in my truck, its too thin, thanks. I stand behind my statement. That article did not change what I know about motor oil at all, except that the W is for winter, I knew it wasn't weight. It can be as thin as the low number, or as thick as the high number, depending on operating temps compared with outside air temps. Since it can be 90* before 9am here, there is absolutely NO need for me to be concerned with something so thin. If I'm wrong, I'll be wrong.

There is probably a lot of sand down there but you really ought to use oil instead.

It gets well north of 100* here. Well south of 0* too. My wife has 230k on her Edge and I have 175k on my F-150, both run 5W-20 full time just like the guys that designed it say to. Both are OHC engines and things like the cam bearing surfaces and timing chain tensioners can be kind of picky about too thick of oil not getting to the right places.

I ran 20W50 once in my 400.

Actually cranked super slow on cold mornings.

I fixed it:thefinger:

what is a cold morning? cuz here, a cold morning is really about 50* and when the sun comes out it over. (and that is only once ar twice a year).

what is a cold morning?
-15.

I shoulda changed it, i dumped it in there during the 100* heat pulling my camper.

The truck would peg the temp gauge at the top of normal and the oil pressure at the bottom of normal (at idle) before i put in a new radiator.

Chalk one of for the resiliance of the 400.

I do, I just have a preference is that ok with you SIR?
According to adsm08, it doesn't matter what "W" rated oil I run. and since it cost the same, I PREFER to run 10w.

You all know how I tell what type of oil to use? Don't tell anyone about this because its a big secret...…. it's on the oil cap duh. Go by what the cap or manual calls for. If the cap doesn't say anything then its 5w-30. That was our rule of thumb at work and we never had an issue. These are plain jane vehicles, not Ferrari's that require special junk.

I don't care one iota what -you- choose to use. But, if you hop on a public forum and announce that you're using it for a particular reason that is 100% WRONG, I will call you out on it so that no one else makes a similar mistake because you're broadcasting a complete misunderstanding of how things work. We've been through this before on several other topics. Having a personal preference is fine. Spreading bogus information is going to get you called out.
