Hey, I was just curious as to who around here has broken D35 axle shafts, and what size tires you were running at the time(s), and perhaps the conditions you were in.

Alternatively, people who have a D35 and have never snapped an axle shaft, what size tires do you run?

Thanks.

Before I quit heavily wheeling the Ranger I was on 33's and never snapped an axle shaft. Thats with 3.73gearing, 3.0L, and 5speed. I did however grenade a 7.5rear and the factory set of auto hubs:D

4.0L, automatic with shift kit, 4.56 gears, lockers front and rear and 36x12.50R15 TSL/SX's.

Have not 'broken' a shaft yet in the 7 years I've been wheeling it. I have egged out the ears where the U joint caps press into, have not lost a cap because I have the full circlip mod done and Spicer 5-760X joints. I know tack weld the caps in to keep this from happening. I have blown one warn hub.

One shaft , hub and today the Lock-rite. Look at my sig line for truck specs.

34x10.50s, 4.0, locker and 4.56s, never broken one yet and I get on it pretty good.

Two with tacked caps, open, 4.56 gears, 2.9/A4LD and 33's. But that was due to unnecessary baggin'...
So far none on the BII with 35's. But I did explode a Warn hub last weekend. :dunno:

4.0, M5OD, 1354E, TSL Radials in 33x12.50x15, 3.73 R&P powertrax lockrite, 8.8 rear w/same gear and locker, hammering up a rocky hill with a ledge, blew the joint on the pass outer shaft, resulting in the ears grenading off the outer shaft. Or blew the ears resulting in the joint going, there both gone now, who knows. Could have just been a bad joint, or it could have been that my inner shaft wasn't fully engaged in the diff (finally did the ecko spring mod) and S&%$ was in a bind.

One D35 shaft, three D44 ones. The D35 and two D44s were at the u-joint, the other D44 was an inner at the neckdown. This was locked w/33" tires.

Learning the limits of these things has helped in keeping them alive a lot better (not necessarily having to "baby" it, it's more knowing when not to nail the throttle, and when it's OK to). Haven't broken another shaft on either one in some years now. Switching to Spicer 5-760X u-joints (and maybe being a little older & wiser now :icon_twisted: ) is probably helping too.

I have 35s on the D35 now, which is now under my BII (D44 is under the Ranger still on 33s).

Before running Welded caps with 760's to many to count. This was with a welded front might I add. Then once I welded 760's the shafts started to hold up but the hubs started to blow up. So then I went to 44 knuckles, and the hubs stopped being the problem. With 35's that setup held really well.

Todd

I was wandering if the d44 outers increased trackwidth any?

Thanks

you weren't killing them at the splines?

thats quite surprising

you simply have more sense then brawn.

quite jealous of you i am.:thefinger:

lol

I just figure keeping a mm or two between the gas pedal and the floor when needed is a little bit better than having my weekend of wheeling ended (or having to get all greasy changing a shaft on the trail) :icon_twisted:

I guess a 60 and 10.25 would make it more moot where the throttle is (or how many feet off the ground the truck is lol), but I don't seem to get quite as much thrill out of it as I once did. :dunno:
It's probably gonna take wanting bigger tires for me to switch axles, and frankly, my 35s have been doing everything I've needed them to.

Ran 4.56 gears, 33s, locked (both axles) and on the rev limiter LOTS, and not always pointed straight. I have never broken a shaft, but 760 joints, with welded caps helps. I am a firm believer that the 33->35 tire transition is the breaking point for Dana 35 axleshafts.
