I GOT A 1997 RANGER THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE IGNITION KEY LOCK CYLINDER AND i DON'T HAVE A KEY TO PUT IT IN THE RUN POSITION. LOCAL DEALERSHIP SAYS ITS TOO OLD FOR HIM TO HAVE KEY CODES, ALSO WANTS TOO MUCH FOR ME TO HAVE THEM DO IT. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS, DO YOU RECKON i CAN POP THE END OFF WITH A SLIDE HAMMER AND THEN BE ABLE TO GET THE GUTS OUT, OR AM I GOINA HAFTA DRILL THE SOB OUT? ANY HELP OR ADVICE FROM SOMEONE THAT KNOWS SURE WOULD KEEP ME FROM TEARING UP A BUNCH OF PLASTIC, BRACKETS, AND WIRES!

I Dont Know Who Took Your Only Key. I Do Know You Will Have Lots Of Fun Tearing Into A Bunch Of Plastic, Brackets, And Wires. My Buddy Had This Happen To His Blazer And He Ended Up Replacing The Entire Steering Column With One From A Junk Yard. I Always Have A Spare Key At The House And Another In My Wallet So I Don't Have This Problem.

I bought a a 97 ranger with no keys and I pulled one door lock out and took it to a locksmith and with that they cut a key to match my ignition

my ignitions on my 95 ranger started with a screw driver lol... from wear and tear no key needed unless u lock the steering colum

The information for the lock is on usually on the passenger side lock cylinder (if you have one). The last time we did this a locksmith charged twenty bucks. If you have a chipped key you have a problem.

yea 97 ranger shouldnt have a pats key. i would do what rangerta said. just pull a door lock and take it to a locksmith

or you can take the whole ignition assembly out and theres 2 wires if i member right connect two and run an inline toggle switch into it

Apparently he can't remove the cylinder without putting it into "run", and he doesn't have the key to get it into "run."

Find any key that fits in, doesn't have to turn, do not borrow a key as it will not return.

Put the key in the ignition, clamp the ignition with visegrips, make sure to get a good grip on the two ears.

Yank the ever living f**k out of that no good c*** s***ing son of a b**** m*****... You get the point.

This snaps the inside of the old lock cylinder, allowing full rotation and functionality of the ignition switch to any position. Do not try to drive it like this. The steering wheel will not unlock.

Turn it to run, push the pin, swap the cylinders. Good to go.

***My buddy lost the keys to his 90 5.0 LX on a trip with me at the local junkyard. We had to walk to Autozone, get a new lock/ ignition set, then walk back. I then proceeded to change his ignition lock cylinder with a pair of vise grips and a ink cartridge from a ball point pen.
