1988 4x4 2.9L. When I run on compression for a while like going downhill, then start back up hill I get white smoke out the exhaust. The engine runs ok, doesnt miss. There is no oil in the antifreeze, and no antifreeze in the oil. I am not loosing much antifreeze at all, could this be something other than head gasket?

White smoke definitely means it's burning water. 2.9's are known for the heads warping, could be that, head gasket, or intake gasket.

Goinng down hill with the carb closed the the vac is at it's highest. That vac pulls a little bit of oil past the valve stem seals...then when the skinny pedal is mashed again ya get that "white" smoke. If there were more oil in there it would be blue smoke not white.
So I'm saying what you have there is normal for a well used engine.
