i have a 88 2.9 ranger and the other day i went to put a little bit of oil in her when i took the cap off their was a bunch of white shit, i know that would be water , so i draind every thing and the oil in the motor was clean, its just under the cap, i changed the pvc valve and that dident help, the cap is fine, i dont think the head gasket is bad, i should change that soon, any one have any ideas about this?:dunno:

the 2.9 has two head gaskets

it could just be the cooler weather and moisture condensing

could be the PCV rubber hose is old and collapsing

it could be the cracked heads thing, which a coolant system pressure test with the valve covers off would probably show

has the truck been losing coolant?

i fill up the over flow jug once a week, its dosent get totaly empty but it dose need topping off once aweek, you think its a head or head gasket? thats what im thiking, head gaskets have never been changed, and its an 88.

like previously stated its either head or headgasket, either way you will know for sure when u pull the head todo the gasket if theres a problem with the head, as u will have to take them to get them decked anyways just have them do a pressure test on the head's when there off

That's normal, it's just condensation if your oil is clean...

Yeah my 88 2.9 had condensation under the cap, and so the does 90 2.9 that's in there now.

And BTW, the gaskets don't really blow. Since the heads are aluminum, hey usually just crack.

nope, they are cast iron im pretty sure. youre right though, they will crack before the head gaskets go

2.9 heads are not aluminum and head gaskets can really blow. When you changed your oil, did you collect a sample as it was coming out, or just look in the drain pan afterwards? Water will sit at the bottom of the oil, so you need to take a sample as it first starts coming out. A little condensation under the cap can be normal in the typical washington weather we're having now, but a lot of snot-like condensation is not a good thing. First I would check your coolant with a combustion leak tester, they check for combustion gases in the coolant, napa carries them. If there are combustion gases in the coolant, I would inpect the head gaskets and take the heads into a good machine shop to get them magnafluxed and checked for warping.

evey time i drain my oil i let it run over a fenger, take it out look at it, i do that 3-4 times be for it all runs out, i really think its just the cold weather we have had, thanks guys for your thoughts. and input
