Well i have a 88 ranger 4x4 ext. cab and it has 2.9 and auto trans. The other day it started acting up and jumping well it quit. Today it was in overdrive and just starts whining and jumps out. It will not go back in overdrive. If i leave it in overdrive it whines all the time so now i have to leave it in drive. But i have 32x11.50x15 and 373's so the rpm's are not that bad at 65 but i still wonder what it is? Also checked the fluid and it is clean and full still.

I don't think there is really anyone here that can pointyou to a cheap and easy fix on an auto.

atleast I know I don't

Buy a junkyard transmission with a guarantee and swap it yourself.

But that's not particularly cheap nor easy.

Heres the deal..if its whining only in OD then there is something broke ,worn like maybe a thrust bearing in the OD planets or the planets its self or the little star washer that holds the sun gear to the OD drum and runs in the OD planets or the OD band worn out, more than likely it will have to come out to be fixed.

If it was just a case of no OD then it could be computer or wiring or the OD solenoid.
