Whine

The severe duty was 61 dollars, and the light duty was 35. Mine has a 2 core radiator so I got the bigger clutch.

Yes, it does need 2 wrenches. Vatozone rents them here for like 30 bucks. I have my own though.

Yes, how much did the heavy duty clutch fan cost, mine locked up and is a noticeable difference in power

I put the heavy duty clutch from AZ in. I never have had an issue with the Hayden fan clutches, but this was made by Torqflo which is the new brand AZ carries. What a POS. I'm taking it back out. It's like I lost 50hp and it sounds like a damn tank going down the freeway. It said made in China on it. I'm going to go to the wrecking yard tomorrow and see if I can get a good used one. If not I'll see what Napa has. I can't take the noise, I can hear it over my stereo.

But in conclusion, this most definitely is the noise. It's just worse now.

The fan clutch should disengage at freeway speeds and this is still engaged. I've also considered getting a non-thermal which you can get for about 35 from summit. I'll have to call them when I get a minute.

Sorry, you probably think I hijacked your thread. But here's where I'm at: I have talked to Autozone, they told me to bring it back if I don't like it. I have googled a bunch about torqflo fan clutches and it seems the consensus that they exceed the OEM spec. There was a guy talking about more than one person he knew with Blazers where the fan was engaged so much that the fan exploded. I don't want that kinda shiz happening. I'm thinking I am going to get a Motorcraft unit. They are 102 bucks on Amazon, but it's worth 40 dollars to not sound like a MACK truck. I'm not kidding, this thing is FRIGGIN LOUD!

There's also a select few who say it will get quieter. Any suggestions? Should I wait, or splurge for the Motorcraft?

Hey, if the original poster is still having that moaning/tire kinda noise, it sounds exactly what i have, when the truck is running and it has the sound put your ear to the intake tube and see if its vibrating and loud in your ear or take the clamp off(like your changing the air filter) and listen in the intake and it osunds like your putting your ear in a horn then i have been told its the idle air control valve causing a resination in the intake and it cause a tire, moaning noise.

So were you able to fix yours? The IAC is something I clean annually on my Mustang. Maybe I should add this to my list for my Ranger. I just cleaned my MAF when I did the fan clutch.

I would think it was his wheel bearings. IT gets quieter when he hits the gas, because he is lifting pressure off the front wheels with acceleration.

its the supercharger that you forgot about putting on

I replaced the IAC 2-3 months ago

Noise still present when truck is parked, hence how I was able to get out and listen under the hood :-) And the noise is not constant, it is here and there.

If it is the fan clutch, any thoughts on going to an electric fan?

In my experiences with electric fans, although they were on Mustangs, have not been pleasant. My friend and I did it a few years back. He bought a couple universal ones with just a single pole dip switch, I forked out 200 bucks for a custom kit designed specifically for my car (Black Magic 5.0 by Flex-a-Lite). Both of us went up the canyon here and had issues on a mid 80 degree day. His actually needed to be limped home because his universal kit was the type where you push the pins through the radiator....and well....he nicked a tube and it started leaking. Luckily we were near a stream. After that deal I put my old setup back on and haven't touched it since.

Long story, but this is exactly why I didn't put one on my Ranger. I do know they've come a long way since then. I just read a story on here about someone putting a unit off a Taurus on their Explorer that was working out. Can't remember who it was though.

Plus, I figure by the time I get all of the crap I need, it would be in the same price range to get the Motorcraft unit.

Here's my latest in the fan clutch saga:

Alright, so after running the Torqflo POS fan clutch for 5 or 6 days and still sounding like my truck was going to take flight, I took the thing back to Autozone. They gave me my money back and I had my heart set on buying the Motorcraft YB-524 clutch for 102 bucks on Amazon. On my way home my truck steered itself into Checker so I decided to see what they had. They carry Hayden which I have on my Mustang (never had an issue) and they are also made in the USA. Bada Bing! They matched the AZ price and it has a lifetime warranty. So on it goes tomorrow morning and hopefully all goes well.

Were you experienceing any other symptoms other the groan noise? I have no other symptoms. I get the groan here and there and I can get it to stop if I pump the gas a little. The truck does not overheat and the AC blows pretty darn cold.

Sounds like exactly what I'm experiencing. Mine usually only makes the sound at idle. No over heating, just the noise.
