well... she failed again lol. i was driving to San Antonio and started losing gears one by one. lost 5th/overdrive first. i think it was just the berings.

my question is, which transmission is the best bolt in for a 1987 Bii with the 2.9l and what vehicle should i pull it out of? i would like to keep the overdrive, but it is not necessary. or should i just rebuild the original (i believe to be) FM-145 with overdrive from mitsubishi.

thanks guys, if you need any more info. just ask and i will post it. i just need to get back on the road. its my DD.

ive been thinking that that is the way to go. but i am wondering what year of xploder i will need to pull the tranny from. or does it matter?

im worried about my 4x4. i dont want an electric engaging 4x4. i want the manual, and is my transfercare going to bolt up?

thanks

A 4.0 Ranger or 91-94 Explorer will have what you need, and yes your t-case will bolt up.

To retrofit the later Mazda manual trans you'll also need
to swap out both front and rear driveshafts.

The Mazda trans is longer (by 2") than your FM145.

The driveshafts off of an A4LD Bronco2 are also the right length.

One other detail is that the t-case will work on the M5OD-R1,
but the T-case shifter will not.

what do you do about the T-case shifter then? would it be easier too just swap both the Tranny and T-case from the explorer? I got the A4LD in my 86 and i want to go too the explorer 5 speed when the A4LD craps out on me.

lost bronco.

the shifter for the transfercase is located in the rear of the transmission. not apart of the actual transfercase. so all you will have to do on mine, is get the shifter that comes with the doner transmission.

i dont know what transfercase came with the a4ld. but if it wont work, its only about $12 more for the transfercase when you buy the transmission, supposing that you get it from a pick-and-pull (upperclass junkyard lol)

Just curious... now on the a4ld... because of the size change, i have read somewhere, that you also have to relocate the crossmember to adjust for the new transmission... can someone confirm this?

87 and under 4 speed trany is a direct bolt in . i prefer the 84 4speed.....

A4ld transfer

I have A A4ld transfer case shifter on an m50d conversion by trimming this tab and bending there but it rattles in 4 low you can make it work but not as good so don't let it hang you up and I know there' ones that will fit better now.
