ok well my 92 ranger project truck im working on it didnt originally kno what motor was in it, but i found it had the 4 litre v6 in it, but im trying to keep the budget of the truck low which motor would be a better option to just put a 4 L back in or swap a 302?

the specs of the truck are
92 ranger 4x4
6 suspension lift 3 BL
33 mud king tire
4.56 gears locked front an back

what is everyone opinion on what would suit this truck better a 4L or 302?

will an year of a 4L fit in my truck?

also the old harness thats in the truck was just cut everywhere so is all i have to do is get a whole harness an computer with the 4L an it should all just drop into place?

do you trail ride? the 302 will have a severely shortened range while offroad, especially if you are getting on it.i was pretty damn jealous of a buddy with a 4 banger who went miles into the back country with us to camp and snow wheel.he only used 1/2 of a tank where the rest of us had to go 30 trail miles back into town for a refill to keep enjoying the snow/camping.

i hear the 91-92 cpu's/systems are interchangable. you want the injectors/cpu,and maybe MAP(some earlies had it with the mass air) with it if you get the 90 since they are a diff. rate

don't go later model as they need more than one O2 sensor and a cam sensor.

as far as a long block get a 90-94 with the 93-94 being prefered.

these motors like to crack and sink valves so i unbolt the rocker shafts to close the valves and sight along them to see if a valve stem is higher than its friends(sunk valve & cracked head).

ok thanks thats what i was thinkin about the 302 is i would go throw gas like crazy especially when im in the mud cuz that will be more of what im in so the 4L will be better for me i think an with 4.56 gears the 4L should beable to handle 33's an still get me up to highway speeds, thanks for the help.

yeah that should get up and go great with 4.56. i have 4.10's and still have enough power to use 4 high

oh yeah i forgot-

9 inches of lift is rediculous for 33's!sawzall alert!

no offense meant, its just that 9 inches is a lot for 33's on any truck.you're better off using a sawzall to clear them like i did so its not so roll prone.not that i don't want some more lift just not 9 inches

ok lol it all cool, i just didnt under stand what u meant lol, ya i prob goin to take the 3 " bl off i was just goin to leave it on cuz i was goin to do a 302 swap but now im not so im goin to take it off.

Put a 4.0 back in it.

An engine and all the accesories from a 90-92 Ranger or 91 or 92' Explorer will swap right in. In 93 they changed the Fuel Injector type from needle to disc type pintle. Also in 93' they changed the layout of the engine compartment, and started using 2 HO2S (instead of the one in the previous 90-92 models). In 94 they started using EGR and CPS's mostly in the later year.

So, if you want a true "bolt" and "snap in" swap, get a 4.0, PCM and harness (if needed) from a 90-92 Ranger or 91/92' Exploder.

Good Luck.

^^ ok thanks alot they clears everything up i was wondering what year would be a true drop in swap thanks again.
