which ones better

They're exactly the same except for the computer system and wiring.

If this is to swap into an existing truck, it depends very strongly on the model year of the recipient.

The OBD-II (later) electronics are better in the sense that they are much more sophisticated at detecting problems. However, they aren't enough of an improvement to warrant gutting a donor to swap all the wiring, sensors, PCM, exhaust, etc.

The later automatic transmissions also require different (more) computer signals than the earlier ones. A mismatch will yield either missing gears in the transmission or a continuous complaint from the PCM.
