Ive only done one oil change on my new truck, i used boss synthetic 10w30. I went heavier because i found heavier oil worked better in my old 2.3 so i thought id stick with it. But the change cost me about $50. I did synthetic becaue one of our techs at work told me i should in the 4.0.

Do i really need to run synthetic? Or can i use conventional which i can get boss conventional at work for free.

To save you trouble waiting for people to respond, look up synthetic oil and you will more then likely find the answer.

Personally I use conventional oil cause this is what i've always used and have never ran into trouble with it. It really comes down to your own personal preference. It is really the oil weight that will make a difference not whether it is synthetic or conventional. Synthetic just last a while longer between changes.

Using the search button will give you some good opinions though and help you decide.
Good luck

It is more personal preference.

I prefer synthetic myself.

My '98 4.0 (230,685 aand.counting) and the '91 3.0 I had before that (319,872 when i drove it into a river and killed it) have never had anything but conventional oil in them. As long as the oil meets all.the specifications required (all the little abbreviations in the circle on the oil container) by your truck, you'll do no harm to your engine so long as you don't exceed the recommended service intervals. Regarding your getting oil from work, please do not steal from your employer like a douchebag if that's what you're talking about.

Neither my old '91 3.0 (319,872 miles when it drowned) nor my current '98 4.0 daily driver (230,653 and counting) have ever had anything but conventional 5w30 in them. As long as the oil meets all the API and associated requirements for your vehicle you will do no harm to your engine as long as you don't exceed recommended service intervals. Regarding getting oil for "free" front work, please don't be a douchebag and steal from your employer if that's what you're talking about.

I wont be stealing it from work, we get free use of fluids and minor parts for personal vehicles.

Nice perk! Didn't mean to assume the worst, I just see it happen all the time and it kinda gets under my skin. Long live your Ranger, sir!
