Which gears should I use for going up hills?

I kind of had this same problem. The truck just seemed slow as balls. That is, until I found the sticky about the stretched throttle cable at the gas pedal.

OP: Find that sticky and do what it says. Mine was stretched out about 1". When I fixed that problem, I found that the truck runs MUCH better now.

to be honest me being in hilly louisiana alone going to 4th uphill over some bridges and such is annoying but worth it, i hold 45 in 4th pretty well but if the hills were higher id def go 3rd. flat ground i do 45 in 4th to keep the rpms down and dont really use 5th til 60 or so. first will go to 35, second will do 55/60, havent wound out 3rd, but after doing so my mileage and power increased, prob from blowing shit out of the old motor (92 ranger ext 2.3 m50d.)

well id hate to break u unbelievers but ur first goes to 35 second to 60 and third does hit 80 trust must on that one and fourth well for all u new truck guys u will never understand the true 2.3 until u c ur speedometer hit 110 then fifth goes to well i run out of straight away so alll i have to say is down shift silly. i live in gods country in wyoming county new york where all there is is hills so. i just romp on it and i cruz 60 all day long up these hill

what will 4.10 gears do to gas mileage? I know it depends on how I drive, but assuming i shift at 2500-3000 rpms how will that do. Usually when I am cruising at 55-60 i shift into 5th gear even though i am in third gear.

My MPG went up. I was running a 28" tall tire with 3.45's. I gained a few MPG when I did the 4.10 rear. It allows the motor to stay in it's power band for where I cruise at. I usually shift closer to 5500 RPM if I am trying to get moving and I cruise between 2-3000 RPM, depends on the gear and traffic.

i'm not from PA nor do i know much about the USA but do you guys have yellow signs that warn you about steep hills? and do they have a gradient posted on them? i live in a hilly area and was just wondering how it compared.

Just for FYI I did the tach swap on my 93 Ranger and I used a 94 explorer cluster setup and it was a direct swap, I even swapped my current speedo into the new one and it works perfect!! I have tried a 91 explorer and it does NOT work and i am thinking the same for the 92. So if you have a 93/94 ranger use a 93/94 explorer gauge cluster the others look identical but they do not work even the early rangers dont work.

Oh yeah I have the stock tires on my '93 Ranger XLT do you think that would be fine or do better on MPG?
