Hi y'all. I need to find out (as stated) which clutch master cylinder to use. I have an '88 BII that I am swaping the A4ld for a M5r1. The tranny is remaned so I don't have a donor car or a specific year. I have a starter for a '90-97. Also looking at a clutch for a '93-97 (according to listings). I have found differnces in '88-'90 BII's with 2.9, '90-'92 Rangers using either 2.9 or 4.0, and '93-'97 Explorers with 4.0. So, do I just use one for my '88 BII? Or do I make sure it matches my clutch and Slave? The other issue with all of this is I am planning a swap in the future for a '93-'94 Explorer 4.0. I noticed year differences from '92-'93. What is the differences with these years? Does this add to the issues? Thanks for all your help, MJ

use the clutch master cylinder for your year BII. Get yourself a clutch hydraulic line and slave cylinder for a '91-'94 Explorer.

Simple enough. Thanks for the quick answer. I am trying to order parts so they are home when I get there. Thanks again, MJ

Make sure that you get the clutch fluid line to match the slave that you are using. They were not all the same in all years. I believe it was '88 up to, and including, '92 used a "black" connector on the slave, and '93 on used a "yellow" connector. The two will not interchange as far as line connection. The earlier slave had an aluminum housing where-as the later models were plastic. (composite)

Will a m/c from a '93-'94 work in a BII? I can get full pre filled kits (reservoir, m/c, and line for s/c) for $115. Although I do like the idea of having a metal cylinder over plastic. The funny thing is the metal ones come with plastic topped pushrods, the plastic m/c comes with metal pushrod. Will the rods interchange so I can have metal with metal (if so, I can grab a pushrod from a junk yard). MJ

I'm honestly not sure.

AllanD did a post not too long ago in regards to interchangeability (long word!). Do a search in this forum, it was a pretty "involved" description of what will work with what as far as years were concerned.

Perhaps he will chime in..........

I have been trying to do as much searching as possable, however being a truck driver really limits how much time I have to do this. I know it is annoying seeing and answering the same questions over and over and over. MJ

You need to get a clutch master cylinder from a '87-'90 Bronco II or a '87-'92 Ranger. Get a slave cylnder and clutch hydraulic line from a '92 Explored.

Will using a '93 clutch and pressure plate make a differance in what I need to use? I already have the clutch. I know there is a differance from '92 to '93, just don't know what it is. MJ

All 4.0 clutches and pressure plates are the same. The '97.5 + flywheels switched to a 8 bolt flywheel while the pre '97.5 had a 6 bolt flywheel.

This leaves the question, why is there specific years for the clutch and than master and slave cylinders. The part numbers are different as well... :icon_confused: I don't mean to contradict, just want to make sure I get this right. Oh, I did find that write up that AllanD did. Thanks for that. MJ

You can get whatever you want for the slave and clutch hydraulic hose, BUT you must get them from the SAME year. For instance, if you get the '95 slave cylinder, then you MUST get a '95 clutch hydraulic hose.

I say the '92 Explorer works because that is what I have used in a buddies Bronco II to go from an auto to a manual using the M50D-R1.

Ah ha! Thanks. I was just hoping that my wife wasn't going to beat me for getting the wrong clutch (F1 Racing stage 1). Thanks again for all the help! MJ

All the 4.0 clutches and pressure plates will work. Any year from '91-'08 4.0 clutches will work.

You will also be better off getting the pressure plate bolts from Ford. You can get them for about $12.

Don't forget to get NEW flywheel bolts. You will more than likely need a female torx bit to get old ones off.
