I know this question has probably been answered here somewhere but I'm not finding it. I have a 92 ranger 2wd and I'm wanting to swap in an 8.8 disk brake rear end.I need to know what vehicle to look for as a doner and did they come factory with possi and is it a direct bolt in ? Thanks in advance for any help.

95-01 explorers had disc brake equipped, 31 spline, 8.8's. Many were available with L/S as well, but not all of them. It is a bolt in, but you'd need two passenger side shock mounts from the explorer, or you'd have to weld new shock mounts on. Also, the explorers came with the spring over the axle, so installing it into a ranger would basically do the same thing as a flip kit and lower the rear of the truck about 5 inches. And, they're about 3 inches wider than the axles in the squarebody rangers, so you'd have to consider that as well.
So, basically, an explorer 8.8 will lower your truck 5 inches, and be 3 inches wider than your current rear end. Plus, to be bolt in, you'd need 2 passenger side explorer shock mounts.

You can flip the mounts to the top or get new ones, but you'll need to weld them on.

Sorry man. My fingers moved faster than my brain there. The explorer axle mounts on top of the leafs, not spring over axle as I put in my first post, so it 's pretty much just like having a flip kit installed on your truck. You need the 2 shock mounts because the explorer has both shocks mounted behind the axle. Your Ranger has one in front of the axle and one behind. You need 2 of the same shock plate because you'll take one, and flip it so that instead of facing the rear of your truck as it did on the explorer, it faces the front of your ranger. That way, you can keep your Ranger shocks in their factory positions. If it's to much trouble to do that, you can always just weld shock tabs onto the axle just like your truck has now.
