My credo
I'll do it myself
i found a 2003 ranger i might want to buy. I'm reluctant to get the one with the timing chain in the back of the engine. which 4.0 engine is most likely in a 2003 ranger?

2001 and up have the 4.0 SOHC which has front and rear timing chains. They are not nearly as problematic as people make them out to be. If you replace the tensioners regularly and keep the oil clean they can last forever. They also have quite a bit more power than the 4.0 OHV predecessor.

Also, after 10 years the engine has either had the tensioners changed, had a timing chain fail already or doesn’t have the problem the the tensioners.

So if you go buy it, and it doesn’t have a timing chain rattle, just change the tensioners and you are good for 70kmiles. They take 1/2 hour to change.
