I'm trying to choose which Ranger to get now. Admittedly, I'm as n00b as they come for trucks - this will actually be my second vehicle (replacing a Aries 1987 - don't laugh, this car cost me less than $8k total over a period of 11 years). I don't know much about motor vehicles in general - I was into mountain biking and computer technology when everyone else was in the autoshop at school. However, I'm browsing these forums and learning lots... and naturally forming lots of questions...

My k-car had 90 000km on it when I got it and it's up to 180 today, so I don't put much mileage on my vehicle. I'm 33 now, and I mostly use my car for transporting my Kayak's, tossing my mountainbike in the back, and I plan on learning how to scuba dive, and doing more camping and outdoor activities. Admittedly, after driving that white Aries for 11 years, I feel like I need to "live" a little and get a fun vehicle that will suit me for years to come.

With that said, I'm thinking a 4x4 might be a good idea because it's nice to have when I might need it, they are only about $2.5-3k more expensive than the 2x4, and word is that they have better resale value. However, in all likelyhood I would probably only need the 4x4 once or twice a year, at most, and more likely not even that. So, there's a good chance the 4x4 function may never get used unless I deliberately go out to do that kind of driving (which, is entirely a possibility since I've always loved off-roading).

Now then, assuming I don't get the 4x4, the extra horsepower of the 4L engine, the relatively insignificant difference in price, and the marginal gas consumption difference, makes it seem like a no-brainer to get the 4L. But after reading the forums for a bit here it appears that the 3L engine may be significantly more reliable?

Btw. The 2.3L engine is not an option for me since I absolutely need the supercab.

Youu have to remember that there are two four liter v6s that ford offered in rangers. The ohv pushrod that was replaced with the arguably superior sohc version that eliminated a lot of the problems common to the earlier ohv.

In Canada, I don't think you can get the 4x4 without the four liter.

If you get a ranger 4x4 or even a 2wd sport you're getting a fairly capable rig right out of the box, with lots of parts available and a great support base online. Get rid of that nice reliant automobile ASAP!

I had an '86 Dodge 600 (coupe!), so I know what you mean about cheap transportation. Mine was - free. I had it given to me by a female acquaintance who didn't want to spend the $ on a heater core that was leaking. A quick trip to the local shop (heater cores in a K-car SUCK to replace) and a cheap set of tires did the job for me for about 4 years, and when I sold it I got $100 more than I had in it to date.

Love a car that pays you to drive it...

What was wrong with the OHV 4.0?

The early SOHC's had timing chain problems, but they had that sorted out before they put them in Rangers.
