i recently aquired a c4 trans for free that works perfectly from a 69 mustang, so i figure i might as well v8 the 91. Where should i start researching trans specs? what engines will work (years, 302, or 5.0)? what do i need? can i use a newer 5.0 with that trans? etc. I wont be startng it for a while and i am not real familiar with the swap. Where can i find any and all helpful info i might need for the swap... anthying appreciated, thanks guys!

302 and 5.0 are the same engine. Any year will work, some are better then others because of HP ratings. As far as what you need there is plenty of info on this website. Hit the search buton and read away.

Use the search as V8power suggested. The only thing needed to use that C-4 with a 81-up 5.0 is a 157 tooth-50 oz/in balance flexplate. This is a non stock item, many vendors sell these, including Ford Racing, B&M, TCI and a few others. You'll also need the block spacer plate to go with the transmission to index the starter & the inspection cover for the bottom. Mustangs Unlimited sells both these items.

I run a 164 tooth bell and flexplate in my swap. I had to bend the seam between the firewall and trans tunnel to make it fit but it fits in there without rubbing. I found that the bigger truck bells and flexplates are a whole lot easier to come by. I often wish I had used a smaller bell and flexplate but sometimes the dollar and your hands and brains are all forced to work together to have a good solution. LOL

Is your bellhousing a 5 or 6 bolt? Make sure you get an engine thats the same amount of bolt holes. 5 bolt289's are out there...i have one sitting in my garage. 6 bolt 289's and 302 are common.

If it's a 69 C-4 it will be a 6 bolt bell. The last model year the 5 bolts were used was in 1964.

You're going to have to find the tailshaft housing and output shaft from a C5 (to mount the x-fer case) if you are staying 4x4 and swap them into the C-4.

How do you get the tailshaft out of the C5? I'm having that problem right now.
