new guy here i just bought me a 88 ranger excab 2.9l 4x4 that about all the good now the bad, i filled truck up to the top with gas drove it around in town couple days got 60 miles to one tank of fuel. when the truck is warm and idling it's up and down spits and sputters give it a little gas and it clears up round 1000 rpm if i mash the brake pedal while in park the engine dies down then jumps to 1200 rpm and last going down road 55 60 put pedal to the floor trans drops to pass gear motor revs and truck dosen't really go anywhere.
whats been done
new plugs wires
fuel pump
fuel filter
coil
cap and rotor

Lots of possible problems. Maybe a serious vacuum leak, bad head/intake gasket, clogged cat converter.

cat is gone and if the head was bad wouldn't i have oil in cooling or cooling in the oil both are fine i've been working on this truck for about a year it was brother inlaws and he was going to junk it which i thought was stupid it doesn't burn oil are the 4x4 works fine

Fuel pressure regulator? Make sure it didnt fill your brake booster if so, the gas will ruin the booster.

Sounds emission related to me, like alot of other shit, have you checked the IAC tpS, Does it have a MAF, disconnect it if it runs better than its bad. Have you checked plugs and wires? Have you checked the firing order? Have you cleaned the fuel injectors? checked for bad or leaking injector? Theres alot of things you need to do, but most importantly narrow down what is NOT the problem, eventually the problem will reveal itself. Keeping in mind you may have more than one problem. So dont be disouraged if you dont fix it the first time.

Sounds like you have an auto trans. That's your first problem.

Make sure your brake booster isn't full of gas and that your trans's vac modulator isn't full of ATF.

yes it's an auto for now haven't found a man to put in it yet. i guess my biggest problem is all the wires and vac line when i pop the hood i'm kinda at a loss on where to even start. gas in the booster and atf in vac mod wow def have to check that out for sure

how is the auto the first problem? i understand most want manuals. but come on, an auto wouldn't cause someone to get 60 miles to a tank..

just rip it all out and get a 4.0 to drop in.

i'm not much on autp trans i would rather the stick for playing i've lost many auto's playing in mud they get hot start to slip. i've thought bout the 4.0 swap but for now thing i'll work with the 2.9l if i can figure out what my problems are. weekend plan are to strip fenders and hood and start to trace everything i found a couple factory plugs that were coming apart so done some cut and splice work for now got a bunch of new vacum line laying around so i'm going to replace all them next. didn't find any gas in the booster or atf in vac mod so thats one thing i can cross off the list.

I've never had problems with my auto getting hot in mud. But mine is a DD so I gotta drive my truck on Monday so I can't break it. Lol
