i know that auto zone will diagnos your check engine light for free but there pretty far from me. does any one know what other big chains will check it for free?

AZ, Advance etc.... does not carry the OBD I code checkers to do a free test. They have them for sale though. Actron makes a good one and it runs about $30.00. It's ford specific up to 1995. 96 and newer are of course OBD II.

no need for the volt meter, a paper clip and the check engine light is sufficient, paper clip from the single wire connector to the top right terminal of the multi wire conector (assuming the row with less wires is on top, more wires on bottom)
