Where to buy a sending unit for 85 Ranger?

I've checked the local Autozone, Napa, and the Ford dealership and they all say it's a discontinued part. When I look on the internet all I can find anywhere for an 85 is one with an in tank electric fuel pump and I have a mechanical pump. Will the sending unit from other years fit?

This is what I found on ebay for an 84. Is it the same?

Wait, you have a mechanical in-tank fuel pump? I'm not saying it's impossible, just saying I've never seen it done that way.

Are you sure?

Engine is a 2.8. A mechanical fuel pump is mounted on the engine and usually runs off an eccentric on the camshaft. I know it has a mechanical pump because I replaced it last summer.

I didn't check myself but you could try Rock Auto online. RockAuto.com

looks to me like it should be the correct one. i'd contact them, as they suggest, to double check but i think you'd be good to go with it. they didn't change the gas tanks from '83-'85 on trucks using the 2.8 that i'm aware of. good luck and post back up when you get it fixed.

yes 85 is an oddball year for fuel sending units

if you're looking for a pickup tube....any mechanical FP sending unit should work from 83-85

if you need the sending unit for the gauge/float.....yeah, discontinued
(i work for o'reillys and while restoring mine...i could not find one anywhere, even after calling the local ford dealer)

finally while x-mas shopping in Bass Pro i noticed the universal sending units for boats....
ding-ding!

i got the sending unit and gauge for $40

using the factory vent hole in the tank....i calibrated and mounted the boat sending unit and installed the gauge under the dash

its not perfect and i need to re-calibrate it a little better but it works ( the gauge reads a full tank as half a tank but E is still empty)

it may even be possible to use the factory fuel gauge....the polarity on the Bass Pro sending unit is reversed (opposite of what the Ford gauges used) and all you would have to do is flip the resistor unit upside down ( i did not know this until after i installed mine of course and i was too lazy to take the bed back off the truck and flip it)

Could you put a new one for a 2.9 and cap the return tube and use a connector from the bone yard for the wiring. Kinna get it ready for FI just pull the fuel through the in tank pump.

So the one I found on ebay is only for a Bronco II with a 23 gallon tank. I have a 15.4. I'm really surprised nobody carries this. I've gotten a few of them for my 80-86 F150's without a problem. Resealed the float earlier today but now it reads empty again, so either a wire got disconnected or the float is full of gas again. Hopefully I can find something soon so I can just replace the whole thing.

So I found out from ford dealer that COAZ-9202-B is the correct part number for the float. i will have one tomorrow and will post the results. Also their updated part number for this is coaz-9a316-a.
