On a local, i guess, talk show. they regularly have a 'tech' guy on and he suggests to everyone to get windows defender (if you have windows) spybot and ad-aware and he suggests downloading them from download.com. I have the windows defender and an old version of ad-aware that there isn't any updates for. And i tried many times (different days) to download spybot and a better ad-aware and when i try to run them it says they are corrupt or just can't run them (can't exactly remember what it says) so does anyone have any suggestions on what i should do? and if it matters i have dial up, AOL, and windows xp home edition. thanks

I had problems with downloading spybot from download.com I ended up downloading it from bn file forum or something like that.

Spybot-http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Ad-Aware-http://lavasoft.com/

Never go with a mirror site or any other site when the origional site is available.

all right thanks for the help, i'll give those sites a try and see what happens.

i just tried lavasoft to get ad aware and it didn't work either it said something to the effect it's not a Win32 application any idea what that means and how i can fix it?

If you haven't already done so, run your A/V software...you may have a virus (trojan) that is preventing anyting to install properly (especially aps that it may "know")...

And even if you run AV software you may still miss it...so try running a second AV if you can get one...they're sneaky things...

Other than that...you may have downloaded the wrong version for your OS...if you're running XP you can try installing the program in Compatibility Mode...where XP allows the app to work even though it's not 32 bit...

AVG is great. Also download Ccleaner and use that now and then. If your PC is infected already, download Avast and run the boot time scan. It will catch everything. It's free.

You can get Spybot from www.spybot.com. You could always go to the download section of www.zdnet.com. Excellent program, but as one of the previous posts suggests, make sure you know what you are removing.

i just tried www.spybot.com and i tried to run it and this is the message i got. "the setup files are corrupted please obtain a new copy of the program."

If you are having a problem INSTALLING a program First DOWNLOAD both programs then DISCONNECT your internet ( just pull out your ethernet cable from your nic card in back of pc) then go to msconfig and DISABLE all start up programs then restart your pc,after it has booted back up double click the first program to install, as soon as you double click it and start following directions for installing it IMMEDIATELY plug back in your ETHERNET CABLE in the back of your pc then after your prog installs IMMEDIATELY run updates until it says it is updated THEN un-plug your ethernet again and run a scan using the prog you just installed! remove what it recommends, do the same with the other in regards to unpluging and plunging in your ethernet cable. ( ignore the so called conflict between spybot and ad-aware) once both scans are done go back to msconfig and ENABLE ALL on the start up then restart the pc.

Ignore all people( if any) who will have there 2 cents about this method as to why you should not DISABLE ALL start up programs!!:thefinger:

YOU WILL BE FINE!
