where should i get spybot and ad aware from?

i only know barely more than the basic computer stuff where do i find msconfig at?

start->run->type "msconfig", press enter.

I run Symantec Antivirus Corp. Edition. Nothing else can touch it, and it catches EVERYTHING.

1996 fordranger 4x4 stx i tried what you suggested and it didn't work, I followed it very closely and when i tried to install them i got the same exact messages.

It seems that you probably are INFECTED with a virus that specifically screws with installation components, this is not un typical, in fact it makes sense for the virus writer to do this so YOU the user can't install programs to remove the infection.

What ERROR message are you getting after double clicking the file program you are trying to install? Is it possible you have downloaded corupted files in your program?

You might want to use a computer of a friend or family member to download those two programs on their computer and BURN them to a disk, then take that disk and put it in one of your cd drives and run the program from there.

If you get the same errors then you KNOW the problem is with your computer.

You could always yank out your hard drive and hook it up to another computer as a slave and scan the entire drive using THAT computers anti virus program, but I suspect this is way beyond your capability? if it is not this would be a possible quick fix for you.

Try to get ad-aware and spybot burned onto a disk from another pc then try to install it on yours and report back!

you might try to install yahoo anti spy ( it runs a quick scan in about 10 seconds ) and is remarkably a good program ASSUMING you can get it installed. http://toolbar.yahoo.com/

The reason for disconnecting from the internet after successfully installing and running updates with any of these spyware programs is so that once the software removes the infection it can't try to IMMEDIATELY re-install it self threw your internet connection.

I hope this is all making sense:dunno:

i don't remember the exact wording of the messages but one is something like it is not a Win32 application and the other is that the files are currupted please obtain a new copy.

yeah taking out the hard drive is a bit over my head.

I do have ad-aware on my computer now but i tried to update it a few weeks ago and it told me there are no new updates available, but everytime I run it now it wants me to update it but never finds anything.

i'll give the yahoo thing a try and let you know what happens. and it might be awhile before someone is available to let me use their computer.

i should have mentioned too that i have AntiVir also, and run it most days but it never found anything yet. thanks again for the help.

Is your computer completely up to date from windows up date site?

You might try going back in time about 1 month using the system restore feature and see if you have installation issues.

I really don't know, i know every once in awhile on the lower right side of my screen i'll get a small pop up thing that says windows is ready to install updates and i do that when it comes up and it's not there now.

At this point in time I am thinking you MIGHT not have spyware/virus issues

Try using system restore to go back in time about 1 month or 6 weeks and see if you are still having installation issues.

If you can get service pack 3 downloaded from another pc and put it on a cd and install it on ur pc this might help with CORRUPT files on your pc, I know you have dial up and if you have the patience and your dial up WON'T boot it self off the internet after a few minutes I would go to this site and ( download and install EVERYTHING it suggests) and KEEP going back until ALL categories say ( 0 ) available for download.

The currently available ad-aware is NOT compatible with say... Windows98

So yes, you WILL get an error trying to install it.

I use ad-aware on my system and every time I run it it wants to "update"
but the update will NEVER finish and my "definitions" are some rediculous
number of days out of date.

the fact that I'm still running 98 on my older computer is almost certainly
the root cause of most of my computer troubles.

a friend has offered a hand-me-down computer, but I've gotta drive to NJ to get it.
