Anyone now where I can install a sender unit for transmission temperature gauge?

could you add it into the trans lines.

yeh, you can add it to the trans line, this isnt the most effective way because its not the "current" temp of the transmission. If you put it in the tranny pan, that is best, be careful cause I screwed a tranny pan up. Also if you put it on the line, have it on the line going out of the transmission to know what the tranny is operating at. if you install it before then you will know your cooler is working, but that doesnt give you tranny temp. I think this would make a good write up for the tech library.

If you have the 5r55e, there a 1/8" NPT port right by the shifter linkage that has a plug in it.....you can take out the plug and put in the temp sensor.....that is the best place to get actual trans temp

Probably the easiest place to put a temp sender it the line running from the tranny to the cooler. Aren't the pans just stamped steel? Sounds like a great place to make a leak. I know there was a large discussion about tranny fluid temps awhile ago. Pretty much anywhere but right after the cooler is a suitable enough location. To argue for any other specific location is not worth the time. Unless there's a plug or something you can pull to put the sender in it's place.

You're also not looking for an "exact" transmission temperature anyway. There are going to be locations in the tranny that are hotter, and some that are cooler. What you really want is a relative idea of where the temperatures are operating compared to normal driving. If you think you'll ever have an idea of the exact temperature the tranny is operating at, think again.

Mjones, can you give some more info about this? I really want to get a temp gauge for my 5r55e. Auto Meter says their gauge comes with a 1/8" NPT sender. So do I just remove the plug and replace it with the sender? Is a lot of fluid gonna spill out when I remove the plug? I know you already converted to a manual, but you wouldn't happen to have a pic of this plug would you? Sorry for all the questions, I just got excited to know that installing a gauge will probably be a lot easier than I thought!

Thanks everybody hwo answer to my thread "Anyone now where I can install a sender unit for transmission temperature gauge?"

I don't have a picture of it. Sorry. I don't have the automatic transmission anymore, so I can't take a picture of it...

The plug is a square head plug. I think it takes a 1/4" or 3/8" wrench to remove it....there will be a little fluid come out, but not enought you have to worry about.....The plug seals the hole where you can test the main pump pressure....

+1. VEry easy to do. Just make sure the wire is out of the way of the shifter
and front drive shaft.

BTW, that port is the test port for line pressure.

You could always mount two sensors and two guages. Put one in each line pre and post cooler. This would give you an idea on how well the cooler was functioning as well as if you had any blockage such as after a romp through the mud and you thought it cleaned it all the way.
